i dont understand people saying apple is "over" and comparing to android tablets and phones. im not a fanboy by any stretch of the imagination. i am however VERY sensitive to performance and the "small things" that apple has always given to their products (like fading out the sound when pressing stop on music) etc. i went through two galaxy s4 phones because i wanted a larger screen and i was floored by the faults on this "flagship" phone. the UI lagged all over the place, so much so that i thought the phone was bad and exchanged it for another one. i later found out its just how android works on the hardware. and i was very disappointed because i wanted to keep it, badly.

i had the same experience on a galaxy tablet. the UI started lagging and skipping on VERY basic things in the UI. i played with the ipad mini for an hour and never saw a single skip or lag. everything was smooth as butter. this is why i will pay an extra 20 dollars, or whatever the "overpriced" amount is. if i paid 5 cents everytime the android tablets or phone lagged, i would end up being broke. sorry for the rant but i dont get all the hate for an apple product that works so smoothly. if people railed against these android tablets like they do apple wed fill the internet up twice over with complaints. for some reason when theres a random broken power button, suddenly apple is "doomed for the grave" and theyre the worst products ever.. i dont get it

Fortunately, with the mini's screen size, a retina display s not necessary.

Speak for yourself, mate. I've got a 4s, an iPad 3 and a rMBP. Retina-quality is a must for me now. One of the reasons I didn't by a first generation mini was because of the stated resolution. Then someone in the office got one and I had the opportunity to try it out and it cemented my opinion. I adore the form factor of the mini (and most 7-inch tablets in general) but the the screener is an ugly, pixelated smear, like looking at a retina display through a storm screen.

You're right that some people won't care but I think you'd be surprised at the number of people that do care.

Umm, maybe retina is not a must, but 1024x768 is ****. Sorry, that's basically a fact comparing it to any other device of 2013. Phone or tablet.

And I personally think it is borderline low-quality, which I wouldn't say for anything apple. It could work for the first generation, because they're semi-testing it. But they would be extremely stupid to do it again, from 2013-2014...that would be be ridiculously stupid. If they did another refresh in february maybe...but just no.

Ipad? Heavy?? You people need to go to the gym once in awhile..

The full sized iPad is extremely heavy for...iPad tasks. Things people mostly use the iPad for; videos, reading, games, etc. The iPad mini makes so much more enjoyable for the weight alone. It's a huge factor. If I want to watch a video or read an article on the thing. I'll probably start out sitting upright, with the device resting on my legs or something. But if I'm on it for a while I may start to lay down and maybe bring the device above my face, or another position where I have to use my muscles to hold it up, instead of it being propped up somewhere. The full sized iPad is just unusable for that. I can never read on the full sized iPad because I feel like I'm confined to sitting straight upright so that I can have it rest on my legs, it's just obnoxious. And then the iPad mini is not retina. Obnoxious, lol.

The iPad mini retina is going to sell like hotcakes. Even if it's 0.06 inches thicker.

I guess my older eyes don't care. Sold my iPad 4. It IS too heavy and I go to the gym 5 days a week thank you.

I bought a mini to hold me over and even though I have an iPhone 5, it looks ok to me.

I'm one of the biggest guys in the gym and I'm a big nerd too. I guess I'm a freak :confused:

You'd have to be delusional to think you're the norm as far as geeks go..

The guys on Big Bang Theory are more the norm than someone who has ever been to a gym before..

BUT, that doesn't change the fact that it's a legitimate concern to these tech companies. They have to know who their market is and, I can see how my Android tablet (Toshiba Thrive) could be considered heavy for such a portable and, let's be honest, small device.

Lighter will always be better in portable tech. People don't want 2 pound phones, why would they want 2 pound tablets? I think results speak for themselves..iPad mini is selling great, Samsung had to cut component orders of their 10" tablet, but their 7 inch model is selling really well.

The gym excuse is moronic.

It's a matter of wrist and forearm endurance...Nothing that would even warrant stepping a foot inside a gym.

People generally don't directly try to build strength in their forearms and wrists. Not saying there aren't exercises, but again, they don't necessitate a trip to the gym.

The iPad IS much more heavier than the Mini and it is a noticeable difference for most people I would guess. That said, there is something to be said about having a much thinner and lighter iPad which is why most prefer the smaller form factor. Even the iPad 5 won't be nearly as light as the current Mini.

WSJ reported that the next Mini will indeed carry a retina display. WSJ reporting it is basically Apple telling us. Get your credit cards ready.

Nexus 7, Retina iPad Mini

I have the new Nexus 7 and also an iPad Mini. The Nexus weighs about the same as the mini and has much higher pixel density. Apple has to keep the same number of pixels as the larger retina (4x the present number) for all the software to work. That means pixel density of 324, while the Nexus has 323. Even though the Mini screen is somewhat larger, I can't see why Apple couldn't produce a retina Mini before the holidays. I find that iOS on the Mini works much better than Android on the Nexus -- especially for streaming Netflix and the like. It also works much better with a stylus. In terms of the quality of the software, there's no contest -- Apple wins hands down, but the new Nexus 7 screen is beautiful and MUCH better for reading ebooks and surfing the web.

I think you'd be surprised at how far off you are with that statement/assumption. You could easily have managed with a mini for the year until the retina was available. The display is perfectly fine for most uses.

If you want to make a broad statement....I'd say that the prevailing reason people give up on the full size ipad is weight. Most endure it but would gladly trade it away for a lighter device (mini or not).

Tablets are heavy and until they weigh no more than a pad of paper...this will always be their single most significant downside.

Actually forearm exercises are very helpful. The forearms are more of a safety area for your arms, building them is like building your neck muscles (Which you would be very thankful you did should you crash your car).

Here's some forearm exercises:

I would suggest the farmers walk (Basically walk for 50-100 feet with something heavy, without moving your arms). I usually do about 50-75 lbs each arm (Once tried 100 and hurt myself :( )

Oh I wasn't doubting the benefits of exercising these muscles, I'm just saying people don't generally go to the gym and say "Yeah! Gonna make my forearms and wrists burn today!" Just saying that many people wouldn't train specifically to the point where they wouldn't notice a difference in the weight of the iPad and the iPad Mini, so the gym excuse for people who defend the iPad's weight is comical.

Are you saying that I just should have shelled out the $650 once for the non-Retina, and done so again when the Retina version becomes available? That's pretty gross presumption on your part. I at least allow that some, even a great many people don't care about the lack of Retina display in the mini, but also argue that a lot of people do. If there wasn't call enough in the market for Retina displays, they wouldn't be available or in development.

The display might be perfectly fine for you. I don't know what you use yours for, what your visual acuity is, or where you place display quality in your spectrum of importance. For me, the iPad is a device for the access and consumption of media. As a result, display quality is paramount to me.

I don't think that's necessarily the case. What I most often hear among owners of 7/8-inch form-factor hardware is that the portability is much better, which is not the same thing as weighing less. I'm not an Olympian and I have a hard time imagining people have problems with a 0.6kg tablet. I do, however, absolutely believe that the mini being easy to fit in one's pocket to be of particular importance to its popularity.

Tablets are heavy and until they weigh no more than a pad of paper...this will always be their single most significant downside.

As opposed to the singular utility of a pad of paper. Where did that arbitrary weight target come from?

simple: battery and power were the reasons.

50/50 for the next iPad mini to come w/ retina display

We still don't have a better idea of the release date this year other then its sometime Q4 right?

Actually a good amount of body builders have specific days where they come in to burn forearms, and its usually a day where you do both biceps and triceps.

My day is when I do secondary biceps and triceps, back and shoulder day on Sunday. I don't work out again until Tuesday night.

And you work them to not be a weakling at carrying anything and everything, not just an ipad.....

Dude. Off-topic as fu*k lol. Just stop already

The fact of the matter is. If you're lying on your back reading on your full sized iPad (many know this from having read books) your arms are going to get tired after a certain amount of time. Much sooner with the full sized iPad than with the iPad mini. Also, if you have jacked wrists (???) and arms, it is still going to happen to you, shortly after. It's a shortcoming of the human body. Unless your forearms are twice the diameter of the typical humans, then they're going to get tired just like everyone else's.

Well it's also about endurance. I can hold an ipad for hours, I don't see the big deal.

And yes, you can get tired, but me getting tired would be a lot later then a lot of other people.. Not sooner.

It is on topic! Well sort of. Why kill enjoyment of a tablet by the fact that you have sissy arms? If we go that route why not just use an iphone, since it's gonna be lighter?

Ironically, speaking of this topic I'm about to head to the gym.. I go every night, sometimes twice a day. I realize I'm not the best example here, since I'm a gym rat, but adding a little muscle and endurance isn't a bad thing for all walks of life.

Agreed. And I also go to the gym 4 days a week, but I'm not an advocate. Just in college.

A lot of people are happier doing that. But now that people have been "told" iPads are a better experience, they buy in. Steve sure was right in thinking he could tell people they wanted iPads lol. I still see absolutely no point in having one, but I understand why people use them

Why would being in college matter? Doing it to look good for the girls? Get free membership?

Or.... Is it just a time waster? Are you going to become an infidel who joins the wicked house of Mcdonalds (Or any other fast food place, except Subway) ? Where you will tell your friends 'I'm lugging it' while you carry 400 lbs of jelly rolls as you go in for your hourly supersized meal of diabetes ??:mad::mad:

Probably no retina mini this year,

Apples plan is probably release a Mini 2 with bumped CPU shortly after the event, then, after everyones upgraded to a mini 2, they will release a retina mini 6 months later and really annoy everyone, but making a load of cash as people who bought the non-retina mini upgrade again.

cynical, me, nahhh ;)
