Change Desktop Icon ?

Ok how abought a step by step ? I was on Apples site but I think I was messing something and could not figure it out ?

copy a picture you want, if you downloaded an icon then hit apple i and then select the icon in the window that just appeared, then hit apple c. Next, click once on the desktop icon, then hit apple i and click on the icon in the window once to select/highlight it, then hit apple v to paste the icon
