is there anyway you can replace icons you've got with ones you created.... what kind of files would it need to be and things like that. and how would you do change the icons
 
if i'm creating my own what type of file should it be saved as if i dont want a white background?
 
The file extension would be .icns whereas windows icons have a file extension of .ico
 
The advice above is to change icons globally. To change individual icons, select the application or folder, press Apple-I (Get Info), select the icon in the Get Info dialog and paste your new one in.
