Change iPhone/iPad backup directory

Is there a way to specify where iTunes stores iPhone/iPad backups? I'm trying to exclude these from the home directory on my new SSD. It's 30+ GB of stuff I don't need to access on a regular basis, so it's better off kept on another disk.
 
Since I did not find a way to do this (a call to Apple support was no help), I came up with a workaround. I set up a user whose home directory is on another volume. Now each time I will be syncing my iPad or iPhone, I will switch to that account. A little inconvenient, but at least I won't be cluttering my ssd with this backup crap.
