Haha! I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this is effing retarded! My wife absolutely HATES the new grey icon scheme, and I don't like it either. She asked if I could just uninstall Lion and go back to Snow Leopard because of this one issue ... no joke.

This was honestly the FIRST thing i noticed that was different about Lion (beyond the startup and wallpaper), and I was immediately like ... "What?" and tried to change it, but there was no option to do that.

It's recockulous to move BACKWARDS with a $30 OS "upgrade." Monochrome? I had that on my first Palm Pilot, and hated it then. For frak's sake most LCD watches have color now. People like color, Apple, that's why we like your nice screens!

I'm fine with the option for the polished monochrome look of course, but can't understand why they took this functionality away from us.

God I couldn't agree with you more. I don't know why technology has this raging hard on for grey colour schemes now. I like colour, everyone likes colour. The only colour in the whole OS are the close/resize buttons and loading bars. There's a reason everyone likes the graphics of Uncharted vs any other shooting game.

I don't understand why there's only two colour schemes for the whole OS either, I want pretty colours...

one of many ridiculous changes that makes no sense to the end user

unfortunately i dont have a pre-lion back up and it upgraded my iphoto/itunes/photobooth libraries so i cant back track to SL which was far more stable, solid and ... well.. just more usable :confused:

just going to tweak as much as i can with 3rd party apps to get it to how i want and not make the same mistake in future of leaping OS before i look they generally had a good track record

User preference, like the translucent menu bar or Ping links in iTunes, would be the easiest solution.
Let's hope.

Lion is almost half the size of SL because they cut out a lot of fat. Do you really need colored sidebar icons? I mean really?

Yes I >REALLY< REALLY need the recognizable sidebar.:apple: It was probably THE most used feature for me. I have some issues, and the color sidebar was a real lifesaver. NOw it is gone for all practical purposes. I am sure somebody will write sorting to FIX though. But ICONLITE does NOT work.

But now ....just out of curiosity >>> You know the way the pages bounce around and don't stop still when you scroll, is this also a result of gleaning more fat out of the works? (Seems it would be the opposite)

I can live with it, but I don't care for it. Wish we could turn it off. I suspect it is built more for devices other than our big computers, eh?

Apparently the ColorfulToolbar SIMBL extension doesn't load at startup. I've got to do a 'killall Finder' every time I boot in order to get my color back. Is there a way around this?

All the little things - RUBBISH!!

I don't really NEED a Mac! If I wanted to be as pissed off as I am now, I would have had a PC running Windows.

I am hating this abandonment of folk - who let's face it - have been by and large evangelists for the company because Apple was concerned about the user experience ON THE MAC. Sure the iPad and iPhone are great but they are different platforms.

couldn't agree more!

Maybe I've been particularly unlucky but my Lion has been very glitchy, my software regularly crashes, and it's very slow- I see LOTS of beachballs!

Yes, I have reinstalled already as the first copy quickly became completely unusable. So how often do I need to do this?! Do I REALLY have to do a complete reinstall from scratch?! That's a bit boring eh?!

In short, it's just like using my old pc used to be now...

oh yeah, and what is 'mission control' all about (wasn't spaces working just fine) and who comes up with these ridiculous names!!

I should add... since rather inevitably somebody will pipe up with the "so, why did you buy it line" that I had to buy it because my copy of Leopard would not work at all with an exchange server...

You guys didn't have to upgrade to Lion. I understand why everyone is upset (hell I am too) but complaining (which is essentailly trolling) is not the way to express it.

If you want to go back to a PC experience, you have Boot Camp. Install Windows and use it until these issues are ironed out. If that isn't good enough, Apples have good resale value.

I assume you mean Snow Leopard as you have to be running it to upgrade to Lion. I aslso assume this is an email related issue. Couldn't you just use a different mail client? I've never had an issue connecting to network drives with Leopard or Snow Leopard.

Voicing displeasure over bugs and changes (big or small) to the OS is definitely NOT trolling.
That's the point of forums like these. People trying to help one another with issues and fixing those issues. Also, If people didn't provide feedback to a company, nothing would ever change.

I agree, but its the way you got about it. Raging on a forum just isn't appropriate to the problem (IMO)

Maybe trolling is too harsh a term, but that is the way to comes across at me.

And I still stand by what I said: If you think Lion is as bad as Windows, you can go back to SL (if you made a backup before upgradin). If not that, well you have bootcamp.

Methinks OP should update the first post with the directions to fix this, or at least include a link to the post that does. :)

why mess with something if it works?

Because you might end up with something that works better.

If Apple always thought like that, they wouldn't exist right now. DOS might be our primary OS (it works). This whole issue is a necessary part of the change and evolution of a product. Changes are made, some good, others not so. Apple hears feedback and makes changes accordingly. Who knows, color icons may return in 10.7.2... or they may not. Remember when Apple made the menubar translucent in Leopard and there was a lot of complaining about it? They eventually introduced an option to enable/disable it (10.5.3, IIRC).

I like it. I usually have my color scheme set to graphite anyway. It helps me to focus on what I'm trying to focus on, instead of being distracted by the OS GUI (not that it's really all that distracting).

For frak's sake most LCD watches have color now.

I just have to point out that most LCD watch screens most definitely do not have color. They may have a color, but only the most expensive watches have multiple colors in the screen.

I'm fine with the option for the polished monochrome look of course, but can't understand why they took this functionality away from us.

I believe an option would have been best as well. However, this issue isn't anywhere close to make/break for me.

There's a reason everyone likes the graphics of Uncharted vs any other shooting game.

That's hardly a claim you can actually make. For one thing, claiming that EVERYONE prefers Uncharted's graphics to EVERY other shooter is just absurd. For another, Uncharted, while very colorful, is not especially so. It has gorgeous graphics, but it doesn't do anything with the colors that plenty of other games don't do. Plus, there are other shooters with superior or different graphics. For example, I'm a big fan of the style of Borderlands. I think I prefer those graphics to those of Uncharted.

I would say gameplay and story have far more to do with the popularity of Uncharted than the colors involved.

Besides, Chloe's eyes glow. They GLOW. It's creepy.

can't win ?

Apple can't win. Some users complained it was getting too colourful, others now complain it's too monochrome...

that's the REALLY STUPID & POINTLESS part of this change because Apple had already won :
in Snow Leopard you wanted color or custom icons everywhere ? you were two clicks away
you wanted monochrome ? same two clicks away.....DONE
sidebars, no sidebars, whatever you wanted you could have...

so why change just for....the sake of change ? worst - change while NOT allowing ME - the buyer/end user.. - to set up my machine & change it the way I want it & not as some nerd thinks is best for me

i just LOVE it when somebody else just KNOWS what's best for ME, makes my toe nails curl...

I'm a novice at Applescript. If I paste 'do shell script ("killall Finder")' into Applescript and then run it, I get the color icons. But if I add it to my login items, it doesn't work. Could you please specify exactly what your steps are once you paste the code into Applescript. Many thanks!

I just did this and I still have no color on sidebar. Am I missing something?

After you add it to the list of login items, did you make sure the box was checked? When I added it to my list, it left the box unchecked by default. Hope that helps :/

Oh yeah and

Apple can't win. Some users complained it was getting too colourful, others now complain it's too monochrome...

Maybe apple would win if they would just let users choose which way they want it. To me that just seems like common sense, but then again I'm not an Apple Genius.... I get tired of looking at grey on grey on grey on grey. Apple is too set in their ways when it comes to customization.

The best way to get your color back is to UPGRADE to Snow Leopard. Thats right, I said it.

Now if I could only get iTunes to restore the color as well.
