Ok so in the Desktop preferences, setting the Change Picture every 5 seconds will freeze OSX. Actually more specifically the Dock.app (which was sucking up 85% of the CPU). Any work arounds?

have the same problem. i am using a pb with pb display and a crt. still happens.

It definitely slows things down a bit and it makes my hard drive spin funny... but it definitely doesn't crash anything 😕

reality

On the couple of occasions that that has happened to me a simple permissions repair with Cocktail has solved the problem.

Try deleting some preference files in your home directory's Library:

com.apple.desktop.plist

and perhaps:

com.apple.systempreferences.plist
com.apple.dock.plist

And I was also thinking, have you tried a different folder, like one of the Apple supplied folders of backgrounds? There might be an issue with one of the custom images you're trying to use.
