Thanks for the update. Saves me from trying later. Did you use the correct case on the name. One upper for a lower or reverse will cause it not to work.

I'm pretty sure I didn't but I will try again today after work and let you know. Do you have just a black .png with no design?

I got it to work. Looks good...i'll use it

Did you just replace the Default-smsanswer.png? When I tried that the new image displayed only while messages.app was loading then went away once the text messages were displayed. I tried a respring and that didn't help.

I know winterboard is easier, but I don't like using it. I'd really like to change the background just using ssh if possible.

No, I had winterboard installed. I pulled down an SMS theme, SSH'd to it, deleted all the crap it was set to do and just popped that image in there. Checked it in Winterboard and it works.
I am against WB, too...I am convinced it slowed my 3G way down, but I am not sure. Oh well. My 3GS is handling it fine.

Thanks for the answer. If it was a 3GS I'd be using Winterboard but with my 3G it's just not worth the slow down. It must be nice having the phone all themed out and still having over 100 MB of free ram. :D

Hmm...I'm not sure what you guys are talking about when it comes to a slowdown I've had both the 3g and 3gs (using now) and winterboard used up **** all of my memory...granted on the 3gs it's far faster but even on the 3g the was nothing that slowed down and as far as I'm aware both have the same amount of ram just different processes as far as winterboard goes it's not really any different from manually theming your phone since the way it works is simply to provide a "scaffolding" for themes to graft to.

Winterboard was just updated to now allow for modification of the sms background in 3.0.

If you have winterboard installed you just have to put your favorite SMSBackground.png (preferably in 480x480 I believe it was) into the root directory of whatever theme you're using.

You made my day. Works perfect!!!

who needs winterboard :p

If you're not in to ssh'ing and you don't care about the bubble colours, this app from cydia might do the trick for you. I've used this in the passed and just downloaded it again to insure that it still works.

I'm still on 3.0 and it works like a charm it seems.

Here's a caption from Cydia and notes about the app.

*this is not my app. It's free and I suggest checking it out if you'd like. Just be sure to read how it works. You'll need to access your wallpaper/photos through your typical iPhone settings. Your photo app will not cut it.

New to this...

I'm completely new to all this jailbreaking stuff. I managed to jailbreak my iphone 3g and I have winterboard. I also have iFile. I got cyberduck on my mac and got my phone connected and everything.... That's as far as I've gotten, since I don't understand how to edit and change anything in my phone or computer.

All I wanted to do, really, was to change the colors of my text bubbles. I downloaded some themes, but every time I select them in winterboard and then go to respring, they don't work.

Can anyone give me a simple explanation on how to do this stuff, for someone who is completely technologically illiterate?

Thanks!

HOW??? Iphone 4

how do i do this?
does my phone have to be jail broken?
i want to change the font and color of my text and i want to change the sms background but i cant figure it out.
im a beginner at this.
help me? please and thank you

As much as I (everyone) hates necroposts, I have one question about this. I also didn't wanna make another thread seeing as this one's been made.

Anyone know why the image pixelates (not severely) when my image size is 480x480 as the thread suggests?

TIA :D
