Look for SMSBackground.png. Rename/ delete the current file... Copy your new file with the same name, repring and your new background should be there. Per ModMyi thread ".. whatever theme your using, find the folder for it and place whatever picture you named smsbackground into it. Thats all. Make sure its named correctly with the right capitilizations and what not. Thats all."

to do what you're talking about u need winterboard

i wanna do this WITHOUT winterboard

Search in Cydia for "Desktop/SMS Background"

that will allow you to do it wihtout winterboard, I am not sure if it have been updated for iOS4 or iP4.

Replace Default.png and/or Default@2x.png at /var/stash/Applications/MobileSMS.app with the desired background.

One more thing... what should the dimensions of the new background be, in order to work in both portrait & landscape mode?

I believe they should be same size as wallpapers, 640×960.

copy the original to your PC and check the size on those.

This is just expectation on my site, please confirm with someone that maybe have done it already.

Default.png is 320X460 and Default@2x.png is 640X920, I pulled the originals off and checked them when I tried this.

Unfortunately it didn't work for me. When I start up the SMS app or biteSMS I do see the image I tried to set as the background pop up for a second. Almost like a really quick startup splash screen. When I open a text from my list the background is still the same old grey...I also replaced both default and default@2x in both my MobileSMS.app and my biteSMS.app folders.

Anybody had success with this?

Damn. Would've been cool.

Are you saying it switches to the default background when you open a conversation, or that it does it automatically without you doing anything?

In BiteSMS.app, try replacing Default-fw3.png as well.
In MobileSMS.app, try replacing Default-smsanswer.png and/or Default-smsanswer@2x.png. I'm pretty sure you only need to replace @2x on iPhone 4 and the other one for all other iPhones.

Has this worked for you? Could you possibly share a screenshot?

changing those two files does not change the background

i was messing around with those all of last night with no luck

and the reason why i don't want to use winterboard is because it conflicts with lockinfo

It does show up, but it's almost immediately covered by the original background. I ran into a similar issue while manually reskinning the dialer a while back, but can't for the life of me remember what the solution was.

there has to be a way to do it, this doesnt make sense to me

if you replace the original .png then where the hell is the phone still loading it from?

unless those files we are all modifying aren't the actual background for the sms app

anyone figure this out???

i've been searching how to do this and am coming up with nothing. the default.png's are "splashscreens" while the app loads... where are the actual background files for sms?

i use winterboard but the solution through that doesn't let you use a high res picture. SMSBackground@2x.png doesn't work! argghhh where the heck is the original file?! ha. it has to be hiding somewhere!
