Changed XLS Icon

Not sure if anybody else has this, but all of a sudden my icon changed on my mac xls files. xlsx file still have the same icon so not sure what happened.

How do I change the old icon back, which looks more like an xlsx file.

Try this: Select one of the .xls files, "Get Info" on it, change "Open with:" to Microsoft Excel, and click the "Change All..." button.

Thanks. I did try that and it still shows up with the same icons.

When you right click one of the files what does "Open With" say is the default application?

The default application is Microsoft Excel. Just the icons changed....I did get an update yesterday from Apple with the updated security patch. Wonder if that caused problems.

Are those ResEdit icons? Wow, haven't seen that in about 20 years.

If manually fixing the icons doesn't work, you might take a look at the following:

There's a post in that thread with a LaunchServices terminal command, which is the approximate equivalent of the old classic MacOS "rebuilding the desktop database".

It is the old ResEdit Icon...Jack in box. Reinstalling Office fixed it.
