Anything can be bought on the cheap. That's why God gave us China. But the quality stuff you always pay for. No way I'm sticking a $15 battery in my MacBook Pro. I'll buy Apple-branded batteries all day long in order to get quality and reliability and years of use.

Apple is way overpriced.
of course you can buy **** if you go for cheap.
BUT... not everything has to be crap because it's cheap... some of that "cheap" stuff is even the same as some branded "luxury" item made in the very same factory, by the very same people, with the very same components, on the very same machines.
it's just not easy to figure out beforehand what's good and what's crap
and of course not everything that's several hundred percent above the normal prices needs to be superior in any way than some "cheap China thingie", and that also includes Apple since many of them use the same components, the same manufacturing sites and personel

Do you actually know Apple stuff mainly made in either China or India

Going rate to change the battery yourself $40 to $50.

OWC carries replacement batteries.

Don't like replacing laptop batteries or the cost? Consider a Mac mini or desktop next time.
Yup. I've changed my own batteries for MBA and Pro. Not that difficult, in my opinion of course.

Laptops have large enough battery that they usually don't need replacement as quickly as a phone, so Apple's prices, even for me, is somewhat "reasonable" enough considering the cost of buying a whole new macbook.

And I believe in Apple Stores, those prices include labor, meaning that's the flat price consumers pay, no additional labor/service charge.

Macbook pro 13 battery replacement out of warranty costs: $199 (Parts + labor) from Apple
Macbook pro 13 Battery replacement kit from iFixit = $130 (Parts only, DIY)
Dell XPS Battery replacement kit from iFixit = $110 (Parts only, DIY)

That's not very expensive to me consider Apple covers the costs of labor and make sure that it works. There's a chance you screw up the replacement and you're done for. If you're tech savvy you can replace it yourself just fine.
I'm not interested in wasting my time doing that. I usually drop off my old device at the store, go shopping with my family then come back later to get it.
I guess everyone value it differently.

Also - they dispose of the battery for you, which for me is a major plus. I had a battery swell before and definitely didnt want to have to deal with it myself. Batteries are not a think to cheap out on imo. That said, apple could definitely reduce the cost a bit, especially in older models. It becomes cost prohibitive to repair rather than replace - which Im sure is what they want.

I repair laptops for living, and I've seen many cheap Amazon ($15-30) laptop batteries where the manufacturing tolerances were so bad the battery wouldn't physically fit in the laptop. I don't order laptop batteries under $40 if I can help it; rather purchase in the $50-60 range. Most of my clients wouldn't approve of the prices for full price OEM batteries ($115-130).

The internal plate batteries in modern Windows laptops swell up at the end of their life. I haven't seen that problem with the older battery packs that use a string of round batteries in series.

My 2017 MacBook Air battery isn't glued in, so it's really easy to replace. Would probably get one from iFixit.

Well there is good option. There are OK big brand with physical shop in China.

I did Google and $15 battery from trusted China brand is 100% safe. My original Samsung battery totally died after 3 years. I don't even think this $15 one would totally die after 3 years.
