Changing default application

I was wondering how to change the defualt application for a file extension. I have open office but all the word documents want to open in text viewer. I've figured out how to change the defualt program one file at a time, but I was hoping there was a way to make it so that the extension always opens in open office. Thanks for any help.

Right (or control) click the file, Open with, Other. then you pick the app, and check the "always use this application" that's in the bottom.

If you want to keep opening that type of file with another application, Right click, Get Info, then there should be an area for Open with, which you change and then you can choose to make it universial for all files with that extention.
