Changing default download directory

Hey,

I have purchased a 640GB external hard drive for my macbook pro retina to use as the internal 128GB SSD is a little on the "naff" side.

When downloading stuff from the internet, is there anyway of changing the default download directly so that it downloads straight to a new folder that I have created on the external drive ? I think I have just done this for uTorrent as I do use that also and that seems to have worked the way I want it to.

With the external drive connected...

Safari > Preferences > General > Save downloaded files to (changes the default path to a folder on your external drive)
