Hi i want to know if theres a way to change the dock and background (springboard wallpaper) without using winterboard (why?), well cause i think i dont want to use winterboard because of memory and battery issues.

I already change my icons and a few more things via SSH, but I dont know if its possible and how to change my dock (basically delete the grey part) and change my background ( springb. wallp.)

    thanks
    Carlos

The background behind the icons cannot be changed without winterboard because it is not a picture - just a lack of one.

However the dock is just a .png I think and you can SSH one overtop of it. If this is possible be sure to back of the orignial dock just in case.

In order to HIDE the icon names on the home page . . . I did this successfuly myself by SSH into the iPhone and mounting on my MAC desktop using SHFS.

In your iPhone go to / System / Library / core services / Springboard and control + click the SPRINGBOARD ICON.

Inside there is an "Englishl.proj" directory and inside there is a file called "localized strings.plist" . . . or something like that.

The file consists of all the iPhone native applications and their display names in a long list and reads like this . . .

    <key> The Application </key>
    <string>!!!The icon name is HERE!!!</string>

--> You want to REMOVE what's between the <string></string> tags.

Make a duplicate of the original "localized strings" file first in case you want to revert to the original or you make a mistake.

Then remove all the APP NAMES between the <string></string> tags.
So that it looks like this . . . .

    <key>Whatever</key>
    <string></string>

    When you reboot your iPhone,
the icon names will not show up!! -->> YAY!

OK there's just one problem . . . . once i did that , and ALL <string></string> were empty, I notices that the SLIDESHOW Camera + Photos icons STILL HAD NAMES.

I double checked and MADE SURE I removed what's between the <string></string> tags, but these icon names MUST exists elswhere on the iPhone. I have not found them yet.

I've not done that myself, but I'm pretty sure it will work.

Go to /private/var/stash/Applications and rename the apps you want to change the name of. That should work.

For example you have an app called Tokiopop.app, and you want to change the name you rename it iEatPie.app :D

Oh, and as always you'll have to respring for the effects to take place.

I try both methods, and the 1st one wont work, it will change the apps names from "Phone" to "Mobilephone"

and if I change the name of the apps, a few apps wont change :( , like phone,safari,ipod...

Heres just a little tip for the noobs out there

Ok everyone knows about winterboard don't they.
go into winterboard and scroll dwn till you see
No Undocked Icon Labels and right beneath it
    No Docked Icon Labels

    your problem is solved

you can use this with themes you and others have made
changing the core files of the iPhone are surprisingly easy
the only thing apple has done really is encrypted the .png files but they are easy enough to decode if you have python.
    hope that helped

also for those that want to change app names there is a package on cydia for that
it doesn't really work for the stock applications though and i can't remember what it is called
but it is there! thats the main thing
