Changing iPhone. Not Clear how to Pair my Existing Apple Watch

I will be getting a new iPhone (11 pro Max).

I read the existing Apple support documents and I remain confused how to pair my existing S4 watch with my new phone when I get it. Can someone explain?

You just unpair the watch, make a backup of your iPhone (to iCloud or Mac, don’t forget to check your Health data is backed up. This last one is very important). Then throw your iPhone away 😛 and use your new iPhone to pair your watch.

As I remember from last fall this occurs as you migrate from old phone to new.

are you loading the new iPhone with your backup? if so it should ask you to connect it and you won't have to do anything else.

1. Unpair Watch
2. Backup old phone
3. Set up new phone from the backup at step 2
4. Pair watch to new phone, based on the backup from step 1
