changing itunes music folder location

I went into preferences to update this to my external HD and nothing happened,

it said updating and then the same songs that were on my internal HD were showing

what am i doing wrong, Im on a macbook pro core-duo with the HD going through USB.

ok, i copied those instructions...

consolidated and then through my music from the original location in the trash and emptied it.

I can now play the music off my external yet it still only shows the songs i consolidated from my computer...weird
