I ordered a retina macbook pro with the base configuration with 8gb of ram. I decided I wanted to upgrade to 16gb. Would it be possible for me to call apple and change the order without having to cancel? I dont want to have to reorder and be placed in the back of the line.

Either way, you probably will be moved back on shipment date.

I think others have reported that they get moved to the back of the line. Honestly, if you have any doubts, I'd just call and do it.

Does it matter if I cancel/reorder online vs on the phone? Btw I am using the student discount.

I'm curious to know why you wouldn't simply call Apple and ask these things? They can tell you exactly what you need to know much better than anyone in a forum. You would have had all your questions answered an hour ago if you had just called them.
