Changing phone number but keeping backup

I'm going to be changing my AT&T number, but I want to keep everything else the same on my phone. Is it possible to just change my number but keep everything else the same (SMS, backups, etc)?

the back-up has nothing to do with your phone number.

If you change your number, everything will remain the same.

Your iDevice backups are independent of any phone number. I restore my backup to blank iPhones all the time without my SIM card. 🙂

I was wondering, because I know that when I've done backups in the past, it lists the phone number under the description.
