It’s the same as FaceTime, and walkie talkie, in Dubai it’s not available on iPhones and Apple Watch. Apple somehow disables these functions. Would like to know how, as the iOS updates are the same I assume as I occasionally update in the USA. Or the updates are hardware specific. Would love to figure out a way to enable FaceTime on my Dubai iPhone X. My Apple Watch 4 also did not get ecg with the update.

It would not be difficult for the update software to ‘phone home’ and find out where your equipment was purchased before loading parts of the software.

Apple Pay is not an over the counter medical device.

I’m not sure how it works in your country, but in most places there are different regulations that govern banking and healthcare.

Exactly. If it took so long to roll out Apple Pay then it will take just as long or much longer to rollout ECG because of the required approval for a medical device. That was my point. That's why I said I don't expect ECG to roll out of the US any faster than Apple Pay did, and perhaps it will be even much slower. In most countries, obtaining government approval will likely take much longer than reaching an agreement with banks.

All they have to check is the serial or model number. In those numbers, Apple does include identifiers for the different regions where they sell devices and that's what they seem to be using to enable or disable ECG on the Apple Watch.

Pay for something you cannot use even if you moved to the US because your watch was purchased elsewhere. Ridiculous. Doesn’t make sense.

It makes perfect sense. Apple breaks the law in other countries if customers buy unapproved medical devices. Just because you've brought your watch from another country doesn't make it legal for Apple to have sold it in that country.

Well, yes you are right my friend, however, Apple should’ve done that way reduce the price without ECG feature!

Why should I pay more something I can’t use it?
Because the ECG isn't a big enough sway that it would significantly dissuade customers from buying the watch.

In how many countries have you received approval for medical devices? You seem to be an expert.

None, but im not selling devices and im sure Apple has all the resources they need to do that with their expert. Nect time when you try to look smart, try better.

No surprise here. Apple's lawyers are already pretty backlogged dealing with Qualcomm and iPhone and MacBook class actions. Enabling ECG worldwide is just going to cause even more workload.

From a trillion $ Company? Naaah. Its more likely the clearence from individual countries that’s the bottleneck.

one said above, apple hasn't even left an application in Canada, so how can it be a bottleneck from Canada part? I just sent a message to our authority to ask if apple has left an application at all.

Really one of the reasons i bought series 4 was ECG , i bought it when come out and i live in Europe, and what now i am screw it without ECG like other parts of the world except USA for indefinitely time... :( #Feelsbadman
So my county is in EU Union , my question is: Is the Apple must be approved from EU Union or from each country separately.
If is the case of separately approval i am really screwed.... i never get the ECG...

European Medicines Agency (EMA) is the counterpart of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

"FDA .and EMA collaborate through “clusters” to share safety information... EMA is perceived as being less strict than the FDA in its approval process... EMA does not approve all drugs that are used in EU countries; individual countries may choose to approve drugs that the EMA has not approved."

"The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is responsible for the scientific evaluation of centralised marketing authorisation applications (MAA). Once granted by the European Commission, the centralised marketing authorisation is valid in all European Union (EU) Member States, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein."

Like I said before, government approval takes longer than agreement with private entities such as banks. If it took Apple two years to start rolling out Apple Pay to EU countries, it will take them even longer to roll out ECG. Don't expect to see it there before 2021. After previous feature rollout experiences, apple should have known better and should have waited to release ECG in the US until they had approval requests submitted in a few other countries. That way people abroad wouldn't have to wait as long as they will have to after the US release to get the feature.

If Apple followed your suggestion and waited to release the ECG in the US, more people would be at risk of suffering from undiagnosed atrial fibrillation.

There are already reports of the feature "saving" people in the US, so I think Apple made the right choice.

"That's not the case with the the ECG app on the Apple Watch Series 4, though, as it only functions on models purchased in the United States"

So this begs the question: can I just buy a series 4 while in the U.S. (I'm Canada based), bring it home and enjoy the feature? We used to do this with the original iPhone before Canada got them and have done so with lots of tech stuff in the past. If the unit itself is a U.S. model and I set my region to the U.S., which I have already done to get the Apple News App, will I be able to use the ECG feature? Might have to investigate this one with a trip south!

I bought my iPhone and Apple Watch in Dallas, TX. For the winter months I spend it in the Dominican Republic. With the update, I am able to use the ECG feature here. I have used in the last 3 days. I get more inconclusive results than a Sinus Rhythm but it works. My Friend has a Watch from the US but a phone bought in the DR and it doesn’t work for them. Hope this provides some insight for you.

No they didn’t. The only right choice, being a health feature and knowing government approval takes time, was for apple to have put in approval requests in other countries AT THE SAME TIME WHEN THEY SUBMITTED THEIR REQUEST FOR APPROVAL FROM THE FDA IN THE US. That way approval in other countries could have been obtained sooner after the US release if not even at the same time in some places. Instead, Apple only requested FDA approval in the US and didn’t even bother to try anywhere else, and still hasn’t. Now millions of people around the world are still going to be at risk of suffering undiagnosed atrial fibrillation for at least another two years because Apple didn’t bother to request approval from the health entities in their countries earlier.

No one is at any more risk than thery were before last Thursday. There are plenty of devices which supply the same function, many of them if not most cheaper than the Apple Watch.
Still, Apple should have applied for approval in more countries at the same time as they did in the US. Not doing that when they knew it would take time was absolutely stupid.

Apple cares first and foremost about the US first. They have always been US first, the rest later. Don’t buy into their narrative that they care about the world. If that were the case, they would have stronger initiatives at targeting less wealthy countries

It's based on the law, which is where the product is sold.

The FDA only gave Apple clearance to sell it in the US. The FDA did not give Apple clearance to sell it to US Citizens in the UK, for example.
Luckily i got a friend of mine to get my series 3 from the usa when he was on holiday and bring it back to me in the uk. So i should have ecg now!

It needs to be the series 4 though, because ECG requires specific hardware that only the series 4 has. I hope the 3 is just a typo on your post, otherwise you still don’t get ECG.

I bought a Iwatch 4 from US this week through a friend. And guesss what? After have maid a pairing with my Iphone 7 I got the ECG function (App) and it works fine. Also on my friends watch, also bought in US. I live in Sweden.
