"That's not the case with the the ECG app on the Apple Watch Series 4, though, as it only functions on models purchased in the United States"

So this begs the question: can I just buy a series 4 while in the U.S. (I'm Canada based), bring it home and enjoy the feature? We used to do this with the original iPhone before Canada got them and have done so with lots of tech stuff in the past. If the unit itself is a U.S. model and I set my region to the U.S., which I have already done to get the Apple News App, will I be able to use the ECG feature? Might have to investigate this one with a trip south!

You are right. I have a series 4 purchased from US and have ECG enabled. Earlier I had the watch region as US but changed it to my home country and I still have ECG. So in short just get the watch from US for now. My iPhone XS Max is also from the US so not sure if that makes a difference.

So if your AppleWatch was bought in the US and the location setting is the US, it should work.

Doesn’t even need to have the region changed. Just need to be purchased in the US.

Access to the feature is based ONLY on where the device was purchased. Apple maintains a serial number list on its servers.

It is exactly like when you buy an iPhone in Japan you can’t turn off the camera shutter sound or you can never use FaceTime Audio on a phone purchased in mainland China. Taking these phones to another country or changing region doesn’t magically turn on these features, they are gated by where they were purchased.

ECG is exactly the same.

Thanks for that interesting trivia about Japan and the camera shutter sound. Why do they have this regulation? Privacy?

You mean Apple uses different hardware?
Setting the region and using an US iTunes account didn't work

Interesting consideration. Terrible for those affected. I feel as if I had put on a defective watch.

Maybe people have already purchased their aw4... like for a long enough time that they cannot return it.

So sell it & purchase the US model,..seriously it's not rocket science. They are still selling well on the 2nds market. Everyone new this, it shouldn't come as a shock guys.

Or lack thereof. Whether if I’m taking a photo is nobody’s business.
It’s to prevent upskirting. If you try to take an explicit photo she’ll know it.

And it’s not as if Apple were claiming it would be easy to get regulatory approval. It took months in its own home country.

Whats everyone's issue? Simply purchase the US model! Seriously guys!

Yes, that's what I intend on doing.

I will sell my AW4 SS space black to a friend here in Canada.

Then I will go to my USA home and buy a new Apple Watch from the Apple store I guess.

BUT just for a thought experiment.... What if I sold my AW4 on Ebay to someone in the USA? Would they be able to use the ECG functionality when they have received my erased "Canadian purchased" AW4?

This just seems like a lot of crap doesn't it?

I think I will be able to erase my Apple Watch and set up my iPhone with USA credentials, and then start the Apple Watch fresh as a USA watch and then get the ECG function to work.

I just can't believe Apple is tracking serial numbers and preventing Apple Watches from functioning properly in the USA. If not, then anyone buying a used Apple Watch 4 better beware! I'd be betting that a workaround will be found within the next day or so.

Apple today released watchOS 5.1.2, which enables the ECG app on Apple Watch Series 4 models. However, as Apple made clear, the ECG app is currently only available in the United States and its territories of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, preventing it from being used internationally at this time.

applewatchseries4ecgfeature.jpg

Many software features on Apple devices are initially limited to the United States, but international users have often been able to simply change their iPhone or Apple Watch region to the United States to gain access.

That's not the case with the the ECG app on the Apple Watch Series 4, though, as it only functions on models purchased in the United States. Those who live in and bought an Apple Watch in Canada, the UK, or elsewhere abroad can't use the region-switching trick to enable the ECG app -- it doesn't work.

Note that the ECG app requires an Apple Watch Series 4 with watchOS 5.1.2, paired with an iPhone 5s or newer with iOS 12.1.1.

Both the ECG app and irregular heart rhythm notifications are regulated features on the Apple Watch. Both features have been granted De Novo classification by the FDA for users 22 years and older in the United States. Apple says people already diagnosed with atrial fibrillation should not use the app.

It's unclear when the ECG app will expand to additional countries, but Apple Watch Series 4 models sold internationally do have the necessary electrical heart sensor. Apple is likely in the process of gaining clearance for the ECG app in other countries, but it has yet to comment on wider availability.

What about US users traveling? will they lose

Ok, so people outside the US whose devices are configured for other regions can't get ECG by just changing the region, but what about US users traveling outside the US? will they also not be able to use the app while they are abroad? That would be an idiotic move by Apple, please clarify.

If the watch is bought from US it will work everywhere.

The only condition for the app to work is to have the watch from US and nothing else!

I’m from Europe, phone from Europe, region to Europe, watch bought from US. ECG is working fine :)

That doesn't make sense. It would mean apple put a hardware restriction, and we know Apple doesn't do that or they wouldn't be able to enable the ECG feature in other countries at a later date when they get approval. Apple sells the same Apple Watch Series 4 everywhere and the restriction is software based.

In any case, I will inform how this turns out. I've always been a US apple user even though I haven't always lived in the US, with my Apple ID being a US account and all my devices configured for the US (and the iPhone activated with a US carrier too). So far, I have had access to all features available there even while I'm in Mexico. We'll see if I can use ECG on the series 4 (bought in the US) as well even while I'm here in Mexico. If I can't then I'm sure even Americans traveling abroad won't be able to use ECG which would be idiotic.

Glad to read that. I purchased a series 4 in the US too since I have family there. Haven't got it yet because they are just about come to Mexico for the holidays and will bring it to me, but now I know it will be worth the wait because I will still have access to ECG. So are they selling different hardware in the US and elsewhere? because if ECG only works on the US apple watches, it means there is a hardware restriction and then apple won't be able to activate the feature in other countries later. I guess ECG won't be available for Apple Watch series 4 users outside the US and they will have to wait for the series 5 or later depending on when apple gets approval in each country.

Just remember that the cellular function of the GPS + Cellular watch purchased in the US will not work outside of the US, Canada and Mexico. So… buyer beware !

This is not the type of innovation we want Tim!

it wasn't really Tim's choice. this is being considered a medical device and therefore they have to follow the laws in each country. right now the US is the only place they have passed the appropriate screenings.

They had all the time and could have done the process long before starting sell the product.

they made it clear that they wouldn't have the feature in other countries before the watch went on sale. folks had the power to not buy it if that's all they wanted it for

I'm totally amazed nobody mentioned that fact in this thread until now. If you live long-term outside USA (regardless of whether USA is your home country), it probably would be better to buy locally and then wait for eventual regulatory approval (if you need/want cellular version).

Yes, my watch are from US Apple store and I am in Europe and ECG works.

Will probably take years until it come to europe.. still dont have apple news app in my country

No surprise here. Apple's lawyers are already pretty backlogged dealing with Qualcomm and iPhone and MacBook class actions. Enabling ECG worldwide is just going to cause even more workload.

that's not the reason why, but I'm sure you're happy to go with it.

Mark my words, this will never get approved in the UK. Not for years anyway after which the Series 4 would be obsolete. Way to go Apple. Should have made it easy for us to enable it on our own volition
Mark your words? Says someone with absolutely no knowledge of the EMA regulatory framework for similar medical monitoring devices. Oh and before you mention the B-word, looks like the mutual recognition process will be retrospectively applied for filings already in process like the Apple ECG app.

Well it was pretty clear that they wouldn’t allow it that easily, as it’s a medical device. I doubt it will be available anytime soon in Europe, so I didn’t buy a Watch 4, even I intended too. Guess we’ll have to wait some more years for it and walkie talkie didn’t convince to buy

Oh well we knew that it wasn’t going to work outside the US. They made that clear even at the keynote.

It was an article on this site or maybe 9 to 5 Mac that got peoples hopes up about being able to get it to work by changing your region settings. Apple themselves however have been very transparent about where it will work.

I had no imminent plans to go to the US so no option of getting an Apple Watch in the US. It’s a shame that the irregular heartbeat feature also doesn’t work outside the US.

The fact that Apple have removed all mention of the ECG functionality from the UK Apple Watch site pages tells you all that you need to know.
Such as they don’t want to fall foul of the ASA? But don’t let common sense get in the way of your hand-wringing...

Why do people keep saying this? NEVER, YEARS, etc. Based on zero evidence or indeed knowledge of the global medical regulatory landscape. Honestly
