I paid the $25 for the Channels App for my Apple TV but I am kind of annoyed they want an additional $15 for me to be able to download the app to my ipad. It works great but I feel like I am getting fleeced having to buy $175 worth of hardware and then $40 worth of software just to watch local tv.

Anyone know of good alternative for streams from a HD Homerun Extended.

I think there are other options but as a Channels App User I do feel it is the best solution. I personally do not use the iPad App that much but my wife does and she likes it being the same experience as the TV. I understand you not wanting to feel fleeced but I realize the developers have put in a lot of work on these apps and deserve being pad for the effort. If I were you I would take a deep breath and simply spend the $15 and move on.

VLC works but won't be nearly as pretty or intuitive but the picture quality should be the same. I just couldn't justify spending $25 on Channels and VLC is what I use on the ATV for now.

For live TV, the Channels app is "as good as it gets". It is truly a tremendous app, and IMO worth every bit of $25. I also bought the $15 iOS app as well, but I rarely use it. In all, $40 for outstanding software and $90 for the HDHomeRun Connect has been unequivocally worth the spend.

Edit: I do wish there was a way to demo apps before committing to the more costly ones, say anything over $10 or $20. But there are a number of videos on YouTube that will give you a good feel for its capabilities. And it is as fast/fluid as it looks on those videos.

Some things are worth the money.

Channels app devs heavily support their app and are constantly listening to their users and fix/add features on a regular basis.
