Why is Character Viewer so annoying?

If you want to find, say, an em space, and search for "space", you find lots of space characters including many spaces. But there is absolutely nothing to identify that there are space characters after numeral 9. You have to scroll down and check by clicking around and see a grey or pink generalised character symbol.

Is it really impossible for Apple to display a "there is a non-visible character here" symbol of some sort? You'd still have to go through the characters to find the one you want, but at least you'd know that there are extra characters.

I know this isn't a mega issue. But it is annoying. Especially as searching for "em" or "em " doesn't find the em-space character. You need to search for "em s" or something like that.

Or am I missing the obvious?

Very weird. Graphic designers I know make sure they know the shortcuts for things like the thin space and the non-breaking space. They're pretty easy to call up in things like Illustrator or InDesign.

I'm no professional. 🙂

Just need some of these less common characters from time to time. Definitely feels like those responsible for the viewer never use it in earnest.

In Character Viewer, this is what I get when I start typing the word space in the search bar...

You're correct that you have to click on a blank area the identify what is actually there. I guess once you do, you can add it to favorites.

Character Viewer does have a basic glyph for an empty spot in the grid, but for actual spaces themselves we get... nothing at all.

Oh well, maybe some feedback to Apple will help (just kidding).
