Charging port guard or not

Hello is iPhone’s charging port still a softspot especially if you live by the beach? I am contemplating between switching between a bulkier otterbox to one that is slimmer and supports wireless charging bit has the charging port exposed

Isn't iPhone already IP67 or 68? Why still bother covering the port with cap? Isn't this standard enough against moisture and dust?

Maybe the salt in the air will rust the inside of the port???

I am interested to know too since i go the beach often.

I think rusting usually takes quite some time with certain conditions, and if there is any moisture left inside the port it should dry out before any rusting occurs, but I am not sure. It's just my belief. Hope there is some answer.

Of course different strokes for different folks, but personally I see no need for these. The only issue I've ever had with junk in the lightning port has been pocket lint, which - over time - has accumulated to the point where it became difficult to plug in/register as charging. But ten seconds with a toothpick has always solved that problem.

I use a port cover for two reasons. 1. When at the beach, it's not always about the water, but the sand getting in the port. A simple little silicon plug keeps it out. 2. While the iPhone is IP67 or 68, I have gotten water in the port where even when trying to dry it out, it won't charge. No worries if you have plenty of juice, but if you don't it may allow you to plug and go should some water be in there. Same when in the snow (yes, I live close enough to get both).

Never used one before on any of my previous iPhones, but I have one in my 13 Pro. I charge via MagSafe about 99% of the time so I very seldom need to remove it. My phones get exposed to a lot of dirt/dust, sand, water, etc., so I figure it can't hurt anything to protect the port.
