Chat Application Help

Hello, I have a friend in England that uses windows live hotmail chat and I was wondering if anyone could help me out finding a way to chat with him.
Will gtalk work through iChat or is Adium the only way?

For you, on the Mac, Adium will be the best option. He will need to use his Windows Live ID to use MSN Messenger software on his computer.
