Is this part of the whole blue/green bubble thing in the US? I can't set custom backgrounds for chats with people who don't have iMessage, is that correct? Or am I doing it wrong?

Seems to be an iMessages only feature at this time. Will probably be added in the future to RCS messages if at all possible on both ends.

There's no valid reason that we can't set a background image for non-iMessage chats. Granted, the Android users won't see the background but why can't we ? Same thing applies with "Send later". Why don't either work ? 'cause Apple doesn't want it to.

I was able to add a background to a “mixed” chat…

Hmmm, our son uses Android and has RCS enabled. I can't change the background with my chat with him (as mentioned). We have a "mixed" chat with my wife (iOS 26), him, and myself and I'm not able to change the background for it either. Wait, scratch that.... The chat I looked at was an odd one. It only had (1) message and was "SMS", not RCS. That happens sometimes where iOS breaks a group chat. Found (2) more group chats with Android and iOS and I can change the background.

Makes even less sense that you can't change it for individual RCS chats.
