if something has ads, I simply won't use it or watch it.
You are on & using the MacRumors Forums (which BTW have ads… ), so your statement is not exactly factual. Facts beat opinions every time. Just a quick reality check for ya. 😉

Must be nice to be given hundreds of billions for your business when you don’t even know how you are going to make a profit.

"OpenAI is not profitable, and the free and Go tier options require "significant infrastructure and ongoing investment." OpenAI is funding that work through ads, and it says that customers who do not want to see ads can upgrade to a Plus or Pro plan. There's also an option to opt out of ads in exchange for fewer daily free messages."

I prefer the "not using OpenAI at all" option. Saves me time, money, and hallucinations. Ok, I'll miss the hallucinations.
Expensive way to end up serving ads like everybody else. Just saying.

They’ll use it to promote their mystery device when the time comes ..
the gadget that is said to replace iPhones. It will be the thinnest communication device ever.

Gemini ftw. 🙌
I think they are winning the long run… At first it was all ChatGPT and, let’s be honest, they were the first to open the gates to this new AI era… but Google has been capable ofof catching up and probably surpass them.

However, something tells me we’re all going to end up paying more and/or watching ads. The current growth of AI isn’t sustainable.

Every time you see an ad report it as inappropriate.
If you value a service but don't value it enough to pay them then you deserve ads because how do you think the service will make money and survive? I don't mind ads for things like when I google for something or read some newspapers. When I value a service and use it frequently I pay for premium not to see ads like YouTube.

Introducing uCloth Origin Lite™ the revolutionary content-blocking solution from Apple.

How does it work
You don’t block ads.
You politely wipe them away with a $19 microfiber cloth.

Simply swipe the screen:
  • Ads? Buffed out.
  • Sponsored content? Polished into oblivion.
  • “Recommended for you”? Removed with courage and a circular motion.
Privacy-first design
No filters. No rules.
Just you, the cloth, and the quiet confidence of premium lint removal.

the start of the pop begins... its just like the rest of the bubbles.. when did the Dotcom bubble really start ... when advertising became the big thing.. ive dropped chatgpt and enjoyed it .. but moved on to Claude.. and.. on and on..
I love how companies dont listen to their customer only to how to get rich scheme of ads.. that we all hate...

OpenAI needs to pay for an unfathomably large capital expenditure. It’s extremely unlikely they will succeed, as nobody will pay enough to cover the costs. AI is not a business where the research dollars and compute time will ever pay off. The winners will be the chip makers and whoever made the best model most recently for the lowest investment cost. That, or a company diversified enough to cover AI losses. OpenAI is none of these.
AI companies without a good, ongoing source of revenue might go the way of many early railroad companies, building infrastructure but losing to bigger railroads that bought them out and took over the infrastructure their competitors built.

It seems OpenAI is trying to emulate Google's approach of showing ads in search results. Google has a big head start with that, but not even Google shows ads in Gemini's responses.

True for now…we’ll see if it stays that way forever. I could easily see Anthropic change course down the road
I won’t say Anthropic will never have ads, but they are the one AI company that has a legitimate plan toward profitability. Business/developers/etc are really paying for Claude.
Google has so many profit sources they don’t need to be profitable yet, and AI is seamlessly fitting into (replacing) their existing search products.

Any user that has said “please” and thank you” will receive one free year of ad-free experience.

Probably.

There is an amazing truth!

If one does not use any of this crud, you will not get adds nor have your personal information sold.

AI is all about getting your information by hook or by crook.
That's why I binned instagram. Pay or get ads and allow Meta to have all your data. No thanks, I can live without 'The Gram'.

Why do we expect all this stuff to be free? That makes no economic sense. All the AI companies will want to make money at some point, so we will have to pay for it somehow.

Personally: if I like a service I'll pay for it. I will never 'pay' for anything by watching ads or giving up privacy.

But that's me. Most people don't care it seems, so the ad model will probably work.
You don't have to pay for it if you don't use it.

The image in the ad shows a honking big ad, taking up about half of the useful space onscreen. If that's not just a rendering and they're all really that big, nobody is going to like it.

Register on MacRumors! This sidebar will go away, and you'll see fewer ads.
