I dont know about painters tape, I think I'd use the multi colored duct tape they sell at home depot, but I dont have anything in pictures

For $7 you can go on ebay a buy a TPU case that works with the smart cover. If you can spend $500 on a iPad you can spend a few bucks to protect it.
