So I experimented and bought one of those super popular external Aluminum M.2 NVME SATA SSD. Under $20 bucks. I stuck my crucial 2TB SSD in there. It was working great for about a day. After that it started to disconnect on its own. Or you try and copy a file there and get an error. Suddenly the files already in there are invisible and shows zero contents. Wouldn't dismount finder says in use. I shut down iMac M3 and remove it and plugged again flipping the Thunderbolt cable that came with it. Worked another day then started doing the same thing. Yeah no wonder they are cheap. lol Returned it and put my crucial back to my Satechi Dock. Where it works fine. Not doing that again. If I do it I'll get the enclosure from OWC or another named brand. Over a $100 bucks but I'm pretty sure it will work unlike the $20 dollar ones.

Yes . . . my Maiwo (USD45) and Acasis (USD75) enclosures have been performing nicely.

One thing of pertinence is to choose an NVMe stick that doesn't operate in a space-heater temperature envelope.

There is no sense (not that you did) in placing a x4 Gen5 into an external enclosure ;)

Oh, is it this one? I want a longer cable. OWC sells one and maybe I'll try it with these two and see if its stays stable on my iMac M3.

Acasis

I have two of the TBU405 (one for daily duty, and one for SuperDuper!). Sourced direct from Acasis.

It's a really simple device; each came with a ~2dm TB4 cable; JHL7440/RTL9210B chipset(s)

Maiwo K1695 uses the ASM-2464PD USB4 chipset (~2dm USB4 cable included). Sourced from ALi

All work really well.

The Acasis is a screw-down unit (tight fit); the Maiwo is 'tooless' (slotted BB clasps, and the cover is not a tight fit).

I can achieve greater U/D speeds with the Maiwo, but they are less consistent than the Acasis (not that I ever notice outside of speed-test scenarios).

I haven't tried the OWC centipede, but the casing is very attractive ;)

Most will probably include a short cable, so additional sourcing will be needed if you want longer.

OH good information. Yeah I need a longer cable. The little ones that come with it is not long enough to keep them flat on the table. When plugged in to the back of the iMac M3.
