I am using the 2011 21.5 inch model that you are considering. I have the 256 GB SSD that was part of the "build to order" when I got it.
Have been very satisfied with the machine. I upgraded the RAM myself since it does have user-accessable slots.
In spite of my good experience with the machine, I can't in good faith recommend that you spend $1200 to duplicate it in mid 2015. The newer iMacs have some shortcomings as others have pointed out - the lack of RAM access being a major one. But they have some advantages, including USB 3.0.
I know you are a budget which no doubt makes for a very difficult decision. If at all possible, I'd recommend waiting and saving up perhaps another $500 to $1000 and then ordering a new one that meets your needs. There should be new 21.5 models available in the fall or early winter.
