I need my boot screens! Using a 970 right now. What is the cheapest video card I can buy to see boot screens on this mac?

I'm desperate. Sierra bricked my Mac Pro! Thanks

A flashed GT120.

But personally I'd rather put the money toward getting the 970 flashed so it has boot screens itself instead of spending money to get a second card and then have to deal with two cards, and extra cables, and swapping stuff around... Not to mention, Windows 10 Nvidia drivers doesn't support both older and newer Nvidia cards that far apart in generations.

Got it. Thanks. So really old 1,1 video cards won't work in the Mac Pro? What about a Nvidia 8800GT ? Found one of those locally on Craigslist.

I will flash the other card, but in the meantime, I just need my computer up and running. Willing to get anything really. I have a friend with an old 1,1 Mac Pro, so was hoping to try his card.

DANG IT! Sold my GT120 when I upgraded to the 970 thinking I'd never really need the boot screens. I was right for about 2 years....

I think that would work, yes.

I recommended the GT120 because they go for the same price (or even cheaper) than the 8800GT and they don't require any power cables, which is less hassle. You don't have to move cables around, and even better you can keep it in your machine at the same time as the 970 with both cards powered fine. If you run two video cables, one from each GPU to two different inputs on your monitor, you could see boot screens any time you like by switching monitor inputs.
