I currently have an iphone 4 that I purchased 5/23/11. As such it is
not available to upgrade to the Iphone 5 at the subsidized rate until
1/23/13. I think I may have found a way to upgrade tonight and save
some case though.

I am going to preorder the 16gb Iphone 5 tonight as a new line for
$199. Then once that phone is delivered I am going to port my
existing verizon iphone 4 number over to google voice. This will of
course make me pay the ETF fee. This will work out to about $200.
Then I will forward my original iphone 4 verizon number (which will
now be my google voice number) to the new iphone 5. This way I will
be able to sell the iphone 4.

So I will essentially pay $199 (iphone 5) plus $200 (iphone 4 ETF)
plus $20 (google port fee) which totals roughly $420.

Then I can sell my iphone 4 for probably somewhere between $175-300.
Lets just say $200.

This leaves me paying roughly $220 for a new iphone 5 while
essentially being able to keep my original iphone 4 number.

Being that I am out of contract my only other choice to keep my
current number is to buy an unsubsidized Iphone 5 for around $650.

So it seems to be to save me about $430.

I believe I would also have 2 weeks to return the iphone 5 to verizon for a full refund and to back out of the contract with no fees in case something went wrong.

What network are you currently on?

Also, this is not really a good idea considering the amount of work you'd have to do and so many places it can go wrong. You're better off paying full price or else you'd be doing the same dance next year.

Sounds ok to me.

Other thought

im not eligible till 2013..What stops me from opening a new line...at 40/month..

pre-ordering and getting the iphone 5 @ 200

swapping my 4s and my 5 lines...keeping unlimited package grandfathered in..

then within 14 days cancelling my new line..

will they ask for the phone back? or bill it to me at full price? or is this a better loop hole than that huge plan..

thoughts??

On AT&T (and probably Verizon), you cannot cancel within the first 30 days without returning the phone.

I'm with att and I'm getting the 5 for 449, then selling my 4s for 280 to gazelle, comes out to around the price of a subbed upgrade

Would you like to sell me your upgrade?

Hello there. So now I'm in the same boat as you, kinda. I am willing to settle for the iphone 4s though. Did you sell yours? I see your up for your upgrade next week? Are you interested in recovering more $ by using your upgrade to get an iphone 4s for free, since you no longer need your upgrade and selling it to me??? Let's make a deal ;)
