MuscleNerd posted not too long ago that iPhone 4 + 4.0 baseband will be unlockable shortly after release. Theoretically, Spirit should would without any changes since it uses the same processor as the iPad
relief to hear that.

Interesting claim unless he has access to the actual phone.

Obviously you're not familiar with how unlock works. Beta 4.0 is "jailbroken" but not unlocked, which is not even available for the latest 3GS hardware.

No one can even promise iPhone 4 to be unlockable let alone a date for such accomplishment.

Actually if you go to MuscleNerd's and sherif_hashim's twitters, they confirm have unlocks, I am also interested on how to do this, it's nice to have funny answers but can we have some sensible answers.

I would think 4.0 would fix spirit. Tho they have a bootrom exploite anyhow

you're pretty bad a math lol
how are you getting $620?

im getting the 32gb version

ETF - 325
iPhone - 360
3rd line fee - 10 + 15 + 10 (one month advance payment)
activation fee - 36
= around 756.

I was talking about the 16GB model. No way am I paying that much for an iPhone..

Spirit uses a userland exploit that will be prob patched by the time the official 4.0 is out.
They have an unlock for 3G and 3GS basebands but it's not sure it will also work on the new phones modem firmware.
We gotta wait and see but there is no guarantees on jb and unlocks for the iPhone 4.

why is my thread being ran over by unlocking discussion?
nobody has even answered my question, if i plan to purchase the no contract iphone 4, when i open the box, is the phone's ipod, safari, etc apps ready to use? or do i have to activate it from apple or att which requires a fee, and possibly a contract as well.

This is what you will see when you pull an iPhone out of the box unsubsidized point blank .

You will NOT be able to use safari or anything else unless you

1) Subscribe to an ATT plan via iTunes
2) Subscribe to a month to month
3) Jailbreak

THEN if you want to use it on another carrier, you'll 4) unlock it.

can i use my friend's iphone sim(who already has a contrat with att) into my no-contract iphone to activate? will that work? or do i have to actually sign up for a new sim/number for myself to actually activate the phone?

what im trying to understand is "What" exactly activates the iphone 4. is it a valid sim card thats currently active? or is it something else?

I can't give you a legitimate answer on that one (perhaps someone else will). Logic tells me his account will update with the iPhone 4 (which may or may not have rate variances), then he'll pull his sim, you'll pick it up BUT after an update or something it'll relock itself.

Yes, any valid AT&T will activate it.
You will need to do that with each firmware update.
It will only work with AT&T simcards, unless you decide to JB and unlock it to use with any GSM carrier.

why does it have to be renewed every firmware update? can you explain that?

the 3gs phone i have does not require renewal every firmware update.
i got the 3gs by signing up a 3rd line towards friend's account then canceled after 30 days.
