Is it possible to check the battery status whilst using Facetime? I am using OIS12 and have an Iphone 5s. If so, can you tell me how?

Battery status as in how much battery you have left? Have you tried pulling down Notification Center to see if that works?
Yes, precisely. In IOS10 I could swipe down from the top edge of the screen and see the battery status while I was using Facetime. That function stopped with IOS11. I just updated to IOS12 and was hoping it would return, but I still cannot see how to tell how much battery charge my phone has while I am using Facetime. I have tried swiping from every edge of my phone's screen and I cannot see my phone's battery status.
Haven't used FaceTime in a little while, especially in iOS 12. Kind of surprised that Notification Center isn't accessible, but then again I think it's similarly not accessible while in a call--all kind of strange. On the other hand, Control Center seems to be accessible, which is fairly inconsistent. However, with Control Center it doesn't show the status bar with battery information unfortunately.
That said, seems like it's all kind of even simpler than all of that in iOS 12, if you simply tap on the screen you will see the status bar at the top with the usual information in it, including the battery information.
If I tap the screen I see controls slide in from the side (buttons that let me terminate the call, mute the sound, etc), but I still cannot not see the the status bar along the top edge (as you can when you are at the Home screen). I simply cannot see the battery charge level when using Facetime. I have spent hours searching the Web and Apple's own help pages to find an answer to this.

Strange, using FaceTime on my iPhone 7 with iOS 12.1 if I tap the screen I see controls that you mention appear at the bottom of the screen as well as the status bar at the top of the screen.
I wonder if this might be somewhat different on a device like 5s which has a smaller screen. Are you using iOS 12.1?
Just looked and yes, I am on version 12.1. I think it must be different per device... as I said earlier, I had no problem with IOS10.
Yeah, kind of strange that it works differently when it comes to that.
This is what it basically looks like on mine when I jus tap on the screen:
I have the answer... If I turn the phone in portrait orientation and tap the screen, I see the status bar. If I have the screen in landscape (as I usually do) and tap the screen, it will not show the status bar (like it used to with IOS 10). Silly little change (to the program) that threw me.
