this is not what I imagined this would be. I wanted blocks for calls that come up on callerid as "unknown", not to block the world except for what's in my contacts... Apple please try again.
I don’t know about you but spam callers never come up as unknown for me. The very reason I upgraded to the iOS 13 beta was for this feature and I haven’t been bothered with a single spam call since. It’s great. I could imagine for some contexts and circumstances this is not a workable solution but for me it’s a home run.

Agreed. I get calls from doctors or my vet or whatever, and they don't always call from the regular number listed for them. I know for myself - I'd never use this feature.

Agreed. This feature has the potential to be hugely misused. I would like this feature to be "Silence callers" with 4 check box values:
Folks, if you're expecting an important call, turn the feature off. You are responsible for your own important communication. Don't let a phone, service, person or anything else be at fault when you need to correspond with someone.
Typical for Apple, half-baked feature, like many others i expected to be able to block No-CallerID(unknown) callers completely. Like No ring & no notifications, etc.
Unknown could very well be a government/police origin call which actually may be an emergency.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. There can be situations where the Unknown caller could be a family member or close friend.
They would leave a voicemail and you would call them back about 60 seconds later. Not the end of the world!

Unfortunately, I get calls from prospective clients, who are not in Contacts, and so can’t turn this on.
My wife is in a similar situation and loves google voice for a “business number” you can put into Do Not Disturb mode or even route your calls to other phones.

I have a GV number too and it’s alwys the one I give out to businesses and such — I get spam calls on it all the time but my phone never rings so I don’t care :)

I have no problem with this feature at all and cannot wait to enable it! A major improvement I think.
I will not see the screen of some annoying spammer - for me that's very nice! There have been quite a few times flying my drone, looking at the app on my phone and then some unknown annoyance is trying to call - as my drone app / screen disappears.:mad::mad:

Some times I can "Decline" and move on..sometimes I can't. (I can though by hitting "decline" on Apple Watch)

I also like how the caller...especially if its an actual human won't get to leave a voice mail, they can sit there and listen to it ring and ring forever.

Yeah this is a little too strict for me. Sometimes I qualify for online group studies that will call you for further questions and I don’t know what number they are calling from, so it’d be blocked. There goes my chance at whatever compensation it may be. Car dealership? Blocked. Too many variables, but Heather from card services can bite the big one. Yes I know there is nothing wrong with my credit card.

Useless. Unless they're wangiri type calls, spammer will still know your number is valid (it goes to voicemail) and your number then sold to other spammers.
As for wangiri call, any idea if iOS13 allows wild card blocking? Been getting wangiri calls from the (597) area code always starting with 768 thus I'd want to block (597)768*

I'm using this today and it meets my needs perfectly! I couldn't be happier with how they've set it up. I get that it might not solve everyone's problem, but I'm thrilled.

This is a step in the right direction, but the Android Call Screening is really slick. If you haven't seen it...

One of the only features I envy on Android.
That actually looks terrible.

Typical Google...makes you interact with the spam and give feedback on what it is to make their service better.

This is such a meh - improvement to me:

I want a feature like this one to impress me in a way that makes me feel that Apple brings the future closer by - like it used to do.

Imagine this: I use no voice mail, as I find it an archaic thing. So, the option of having someone speak in a message is a no go zone for me. Apple should be as modern thinking to take this as a starting point: exclude voice mail altogether in a solution for the problem at hand. Perhaps it could take a message and text it to me, yeah... that could work.

Things I would personally work out in a function that hopefully would impress others as well:

- first of all - I want to be able to overrule a potentially blocked call that comes up as a notification - I don’t want to have a missed call from the first second.

- Integrated caller number info using the databases of Maps. With an amazing amount of (business) phone numbers anyways currently available in Apple’s own registers, an unknown number would be shown to me in a notification: incoming call from company X in a certain city: pick up or ignore?

- In my case, spam calls most often have a foreign number, since (1) my number is not publicly listed (2) my number is listed in a database that prohibits national marketing and other anonymous callers (omitting the random number dialings)

So, I want to be able to set a geographic beacon for incoming calls. Other relevant filter options should be a geek’s dream.

- as mentioned by another post above: contact info from signatures in incoming mails is being used by iOS to suggest contacts, which can be great if business potential has proven itself. I want iOS to offer me the choice to choose if I want to pick up a call that says “incoming call - maybe:client X that mailed you a few days ago”

- a blacklist database managed by my operator or by Apple should be able to filter BS calls with 100% certainty. The relevance if those is immense: who really wants such calls anyways???

Basically the fantasy above would give me secretary style quality conversations, while the doctor can still call me, or the tax office or whatever else that has potential importance. I would thank my iPhone for that and I would be happy to continually be amazed by Apple.

Unfortunately...

I would agree with you if the feature is as easily accessible as Do Not Disturb mode. As implemented, it requires 3 steps to change the setting or to check the status:
  1. Launch Settings app
  2. Scroll a page or two and click Phone
  3. Locate and disable Silence Unknown Callers

I hope they add a way to quickly toggle this on/off from control center because I would like to temporarily disable it when I do something such as request an Uber.

Yea, I agree! Still a nice feature though and been loving not getting calls constantly for warranty service! But there are times when a credit card company or something may call. I think it just sends them to voicemail, but could be wrong.

Seems like they can determine if you’ve talked to a specific number for more than an x amount of time and on x and on how many occasions you’ve spoke with an unlisted number and determine the likelihood you may want to answer a call imo

Most of my incoming spammers shows a phone number that looks similar to my own (area code). Rarely "Unknown" is displayed. If a caller has is not in my contact list then by definition it is unknown. I like this new feature just as described.

I have been using this since June 3rd and I have not received one single spam call since. Not one. If you ‘miss’ a call from someone you’ve been expecting, they can leave you a message or you get a ‘missed call’ bubble. When you call them back, they can now call you without them getting blocked. I can’t tell you how life changing this has been!!

No, blocking unknown is not very helpful, pretty much useless actually. Nearly all of my robocalls have caller ID, many times spoofed with my area code and sometimes even a local prefix, or even my exact prefix. I rarely get a phone call that comes through as unknown/no caller ID.
even so Apple's feature is WAY too harsh and is bound to block some legitimate calls. I routinely get calls from ppl not in my Contacts. From everybody starting from delivery ppl, doctors, repairmen etc. I can't imagine many people for whom this will not be an issue.

To make matter worse, the telecom companies are not helping.
One of my family member called my work phone and it showed my name, because apparently the family plan is under my name.

I just let them go to voice mail. My Doctors and other important contacts will leave a message. 100% they leave a message. This will work great, notify me without disturbing, check messages, important call back. Otherwise delete. Not perfect but a good step.

If it’s a Dr or something that is important and gets blocked, leave a VM and I call right back.

Minor factoid:
Doesn't always work that way in Australia. Doctors (in most cases) will not leave voice messages on mobiles if the recipient doesn't have a clear message identifying them self as the authorised receiver of the message.
