Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.
I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate.
All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain."

It made me think of Bladerunner too!

Agree. He's bent that thing over a few times. Nasty.

The other area that I believe the Japanese will initially trump the US is the area of military battle suits. We're already doing research in them, but it's much more central in the Japanese psyche. Skunkworks could prove me wrong, but I'm betting on the Japanese for now.

The Japanese seem more comfortable around machines than around other humans. That may explain their unnatural obsession with creating human-like robotic creatures.

One step closer to creating Data ;) :p I wonder where people will take this technology...

animatronics

Except for reacting when someone pretends to slap it, I don't see that this robot can do much more than the "animatronic" robots at Disneyland and Disney World can do. And the Disney robots did that 50 years ago.

This doesn't seem like an advance in robotics so much as an advance in realistic animated sculpture. And even that is probably not much of an advance. Special effects in films used to rely on realistic-looking animated sculpture for many years before CG effects made that obsolete.

More likely puppets which got you a realistic movement as well. They were doing a bunch of really cool stuff for special effects in movies before a lot of the modern technology came along. There was a silent movie which had things flying around where it was all done with people dressed in black against a black back drop. They had the art of it down to the point where not only did the film of the time not pick them up but the black of the background wasn't noticeable.

I would have to see the robot up close to really say if there was a substantial improvement in appearance. Once you get latex, and flexible pvc the real improvements come in the small details of the skin. Pores, hair, the translucency of the skin and the variations in skin tone.

Looks like a death trap should that thing fall over while being inside of it.
