My MacBook has been freezing recently (last couple weeks) where it shows this checkerboard type pattern with various colours. It requires a hard reset to fix.

I've reset the PRAM, reinstalled Mavericks, and run a Hardware Check (came back fine).

Any idea what could be causing this?

Bad GPU would be my guess if it's doing that right at boot time before any drivers are loaded.

Give Apple a call.

Did you buy this computer online?

Are you out of warrant or Apple Care?

If possible, take it to an Apple Store (make an appointment) or call them.

This looks like a bad GPU

Yeah I was worried its a logic board or gpu issue.

It started a few months ago, and its over a year out of warranty. Didn't buy Applecare Plus unfortunately.

I've also added in an SSD aftermarket and removed the optical drive. If I bring it in to apple with they still look at it?

Might be worth taking it to them and seeing if they can do anything
