checking for viruses and malware in a downloaded file

Found a PC editing tool for MacOS for a bit of kit I own (that has been discontinued by the manufacturer) and acquired the zip file. However I would like to check it for viruses and/or malware first.

I saw an ad for an app called CleanMyMac and was wondering if it (or similar apps) would be worth it to buy it? Do I need it? Are there exisiting Mac tools already available?

On macOS devices, malware defenses are structured using the following: App Store, or Gatekeeper combined with Notarization, and XProtect.

If the file you have is a ".pkg", then use "Suspicious Package" to examine it.

Suspicious Package shows the contents of an installer package, but it won't help to determine if anything in that package is malware if the user doesn't specifically know what they're looking for.

Ive had a couple iterations of CleanMyMac in the past. As such I personally wouldn't recommend it as the "cleaning" can be aggressive, unnecessary and can lead to file forks being broken.

I prefer Bitdefender because it has configurable actions for infected items.
