I've just purchased an mbp 13 2016. This is my first mac and I'm getting used to it. Checking it before buying was very different to that of windows machines; iCloud sign out, turn off find my mac etc.

Anyway the only thing I didn't do while with the seller was to deauthorize iTunes. The seller had said he signed out of everything, and reinstalled macOS, and indeed iCloud and iTunes was not signed into. However, when I go on iTunes and ask to deauthorize it prompts me to sign in and go ahead. Is this just default, or does it mean it hasn't been deauthorized?

Separate question, what would've happened if the seller reinstalled macOS without signing out of iCloud etc. Would it just automatically sign in when first booted up after the reinstall? And what is the particular danger for the buyer if iCloud and iTunes aren't signed out before reinstall?

Thanks.

Are you getting an error message in iTunes when signing in to your own iTunes account?

Did you try installing a fresh installation of the macOS?

If the seller didn't sign out of iTunes, it shouldn't be a problem. As for icloud, I am not sure but I've purchased 5 used Macbooks in the past year and none of them have been a problem as long as I was able to wipe and perform a clean macOS installation. For all five machines I purchased, I was able to sign into my icloud account, sync my bookmarks, and carry on using the machines with no problems.

If you erased the drive, and reinstalled macOS from scratch (always recommended with used Macs), then iTunes will not be an issue. The iTunes authorization is tied to the name of the computer or device, and allows the user of that Mac to purchase music through iTunes. That's it.
If you have erased and reinstalled macOS, you have the opportunity to name your Mac whatever you like.
And, add the computer to your list of up to five Macs, authorized to purchase through iTunes.
And, done.
(If the seller has not de-authorized the sold Mac through iTunes, it won't affect you in any way --- because you erased the drive and reinstalled the system... That's a good reason why you would do that. :D )

Thanks for the replies. I've reset it again for good measure and all it fine.
