since you said you buy a phone every year, add another line item for that second phone

Yes but I sell the phone for usually what I paid for it, maybe a little less so I suppose you have a point but then it's a wash. Even if Next were cheaper, I like having my unlimited plan for now. :)

EDIT:

Actually, if I did it your way, I'd have to give back the Next phone after 12mo, or pay the full amount anyway, so I'm actually doing better under current plan vs going Next.

Users on all four major networks in the United States can type a quick code into their phones to get an immediate report on their upgrade status via text message. The codes are as follows:

- AT&T: *639#
- Sprint: 1311
- T-Mobile: #874
- Verizon: #874

I don't understand how to check this on T-Mobile. With AT&T I was just able to enter the code into the keypad on the phone app and a message would come up.

Can anyone tell me.....after you satisfy your 2yr contract on AT&T....technically the phone is yours, but your plan doesn't change. You're still paying the $40/month/phone on the plan....you are now just month-to-month.

What options do you have? How do you reduce that cost? Do you have to signup for a new Next plan....but now you are brining your own device (since it's paid off)? How does that work term wise? Are you locked into a length or term since you wouldn't be making phone payments?

if you switch to the mobile share value plans and use NEXT it's a lower price

Ok thanks. Just curious, but honestly, we upgrade every 2 years anyway. Was just curious IF we were every in a situation where we didn't want to upgrade....what was possible to lower the price since we would have fulfilled our contract.

With all my numbers, I'm still showing that the good old 2yr contract for 2 phones on the 2GB mobile share plan still comes out slightly less than Next. So as long as we are ok with no early upgrades.....we will probably stick with the 2yr way.

Once the 2-yr contract is up, you'll need to change your plan over to reflect that you've "brought" your own equipment to qualify for the monthly discount.

And in doing this if we ever wanted to.....are you locked into any sort of contract? Or is it month to month?

Pre Order question

I am hoping someone else has tried this before.....So I am in the middle of my contract from buying my 5S... I want to upgrade to 6+.. I know there is a early upgrade fee that is roughly 250ish dollars associated with this......

Has anyone did a early upgrade on a Pre Order and has it been the cost of the phone plus the 250ish dollar figure...... Or do you have to wait until release date before you can accomplish this?

And I still haven't seen the answer to upgrading after 12 months on Next.....do you have to send the phone in BEFORE you upgrade? Or do you do the upgrade and then send the phone in (assuming you have made your 12 payments).

You would upgrade first and then send the phone in. I believe they will send you a shipping box and you have 30 days to return it.

Awesome thanks! Figured it would have to be that way or else you would be without a phone and nobody would be able to pre-order.

AT&T Inc. (T) will let customers trade in their old iPhone for a new iPhone 6 and as much as a $300 credit, joining the wave of deals across the industry designed to lure more subscribers.

:cool::cool::cool:

Apparently this is true.

What isn't clear to me is whether this trade-in deal is available for existing AT&T wireless customers or only new customers...

Seems like a lot of people are confusing Next as a plan to compare against the contract plan. All Next is, is a finance plan to buy a phone or phones. In reality, your contract plan is your phone bill + the cost of the phone. Mobile share plan is just your plan with no hardware costs. If you want new hardware Next is there to make it affordable. It gives you the benefit as well to upgrade sooner. Its not for everyone. For me its perfect because I get bored with things quickly, so being able to upgrade every year is perfect. Also, a few months ago I switched to the mobile share plan and wiped out my subsidy costs and have saved about 80 bucks a month on 3 lines. With 2 new phones the payments will get me pretty close to where i was before, but I'm also not having to make a down payment of 600 dollars for 2 phones. I'm sure if I split that out over the 12 month period it would be pretty close to where I was before or possibly even better.

How would pre-ordering throught AT&T work in order to get the $200 trade in credit for my iPhone 4? Seems like I won't be able to do it online, maybe do a store pick up??

The only joke is when you don't understand how the service works and then go off ranting with your misunderstanding.

I'm on a family plan with ATT Next, 4 lines + 10 gigs of data shared.

The base mobile share 10GB is $100 for us (thanks EDU discount).

If you have a 2 year contract and buy the subsidized phone for $299 or whatever, each line costs $40.

If you have AT&T Next, each line only costs $15 and then you pay the $25ish (depending on what model/size) for the phone.

The costs work out the same or cheaper for AT&T Next. You have to pay the monthly rate for the phone, but the line only costs $15 instead of $40 because they are no longer using that extra cost built into the line to subsidize the phone.
This is my situation. My 10GB Mobile Share Value Plan is $100/month - 23% discount ($77/month). Three iPhone 4S each cost $15/month (after $25 off $40 for no contract). That brings me to $122/month pre-tax&fee for owning three phones. If I upgrade my phones through the NEXT program, this cost doesn't change, right?

Through September 30, AT&T is giving $200 for the iPhone 4S regardless of size, which appears to be the best deal I can get for my 16GB, 32GB, and even 64GB iPhone 4S phones. That's $600 back for the three phones.

Also through September 30, "new and existing AT&T customers who activate a new line of service with a smartphone on an AT&T Next installment agreement can get a $100 bill credit." Since I'm not on a NEXT plan currently, that should mean I also get $300 off for the three phones if I go the NEXT route.

I was thinking of buying the phones outright, but it seems NEXT is the best way to go, since it also waives the activation fee. Am I missing anything? I'll pay the retail cost regardless, but NEXT has extra perks and gives me access to the trade-in deal and NEXT $100 credit.

If I do AT&T next this year, then use my wife's 2 year upgrade next year, can we swap phones? Or does the AT&T next program lock that phone onto the same line?

My plan is to use AT&T next to upgrade to iPhone 6 (previously upgraded to 5s in Nov 2013), then next year use her upgrade to probably get the 6S. Pass the 6 to her.

Unlock

So after reading this forum I have decided to upgrade using the AT&T NEXT program through Apple's website. I was wondering of the best way to go about the switchover of the phone when I receive it. I will be asking AT&T to unlock my old phone since Gazelle with give me more money for it that way. So my old iPhone 5 will go to my son since it is 32GB and his current one is 16GB. He is the way I think I need to accomplish this.

1. Switch sim cards of the two iPhone 5s so that my phone number is now associated with the 16GB one.
2. Turn on the 16BG phone and leave off the 32GB one.
3. Turn on the iPhone 6 and activate it.
4. Submit my unlock request online.

So ATT may take 5 days to respond to the request and they might need the new phone activated for 14 days before they will unlock the old one.
Do I twiddle my thumbs for 2 and a half weeks or is there a way to do this process faster so I can send my phone to Gazelle quicker?

I don't want to send the request now and have it unlock my 32GB phone by accident. I don't think I could send my son's phone number to unlock the 16GB phone now since it wouldn't go through until after the 14 day grace period. Is it the sim that is in control of the unlocking or is it the actual phone hardware that is affected? I'm not sure if I am over thinking this since this is the first time I will be unlocking a phone.

Not sure I'm fully comprehending...
If you're only getting one phone, you can EITHER get it at Verizon proper (my suggestion) or Verizon Walmart... obviously you can't buy one phone at two places... so I'm not clear on how you'd use your upgrade at Verizon & trade in your old phone to get a $200 credit toward your new iPhone... but then take that $200 credit to Walmart & use it to buy the same phone, using the same upgrade. Lol, am I misunderstanding what you're wanting to do??
You know you ONLY get the $200 from Verizon if you actually upgrade, right?
You can't go get $200 for your old 4S, THEN take that upgrade to Walmart. The upgrade is gone... you used it to get the $200 rebate card!!!!
Btw, they take two weeks to get there in the mail- so you need all the cash up front.
In a nutshell- at VZ proper, you can pay $299 for the 6+ & get reimbursed $200, making it $99.... at Walmart you can pay $279 & have it stay $279.

Thanks, Ill just go to Verizon and get it, I try to save as much as possible.

Really great info here as I said before. Def has cleared many things up for me!

1) Can any other ATT clients confirm that reps via phone calls say that we will KEEP and are NOT taking away the Unlimited features on our messaging and data?

2) Does the Next account just act as a month to month account- where we are lacking a "contract" and can cancel with no early termination fee?

3) On the Next account, if you tuen in your phone at 12 months to upgrade to a new phone- what if our phones are beaten up (within reason) and the likes? Is that something that is relevant when they take it in at 12 months for another upgrade?

4) Does anyone know if my BlackBerry Unlimited data and message plans, would just roll over to my iPhone if I decide to get one?

5) Also, little off topic but I see many here mention gettin the iPhone 6 64gb more than anyone mentioning the iPhone 6 128gb version. I know much of that is personal but I was wondering if 64gb version is something that seems to be enough for the masses whereas the 128gb may aim for heavier media users? Thanks again everyone.

I wish I didn't have to choose between the size I want and the camera I want. Life is so hard for me.

What's funny is...

Optical image stabilization actually requires an extra lens element set. So it MAY be possible that if you manage to hold the phone still, the 6 may take better photos than the 6 Plus.

Just looking on the bright side for you. You're welcome. :)

I am on Verizon and figured I would switch from 2-year contract to Edge when I get the 6. My contract isn't up until November, and Verizon already told me if I'm not renewing the contract then the price for the 6 will be the same whether I do it now or wait, and my 4s has been on life support for months so it is too painful to wait another 60 days.

1. Is Verizon Edge available through Best Buy or the Apple store?

2. I see Verizon has carefully rephrased their Edge requirements for the new iPhone: they are using the term "well-qualified purchasers" - I wonder will that be all otherwise eligible Edge customers or if they are going to tier the pricing?

Not sure if anyone answered your ? yet, but yes, Edge is available through best buy. Not sure about apple. :D

Since AT&T is dropping the Godfathered unlimited. Can you hear me now?
Might have to make the switch.

:confused::confused::confused:

Wow, this is the first I'm hearing about this. How disappointing :/

Question about discount on lines

I read through many pages of this thread; however I am not finding an answer to a simple question about the AT&T Next program. If I am on the 15 GB Mobile Share Plan currently and I have 3 phones on the family plan - if I buy the Next 18 Plan for upgrading my current phone, will I receive a $25 discount on all three lines on the Mobile Share? I am thinking I only get a discount on my line while my other (2 year contract) phones remain $40 per month? I also have a corporate discount, so will I get a discount off the remaining $15 per line if only one phone is on the Next program? I hope this makes sense. If all lines get discounted by $25 and I still get my corporate discount, then the Next 18 is a no-brainer for me. Thanks!

The only thing I want to know is if AT&T is really going away with the grandfather plans. Must know before I decide on my carrier preorder tomorrow
