I was corresponding with a buyer and I have the machine serial number. Is there anyway I can check the status of the machine? Can I call up Apple and check it or will they not give that info out.

Also, if the machine is out of warranty, will Apple allow you to purchase Applecare? I presume you'd have to bring it in and have them look it over first of course.

Nope. You can only purchase AppleCare during the 1 year warranty period from the date of original purchase. After that, you're on your own as far as repairs go.

I don't know if there's any way for the average user to check the sn online, but those with Apple Global Service Exchange access can. I happen to have such access, and will be happy to check the sn for you, otherwise any Apple store or Apple service shop will be able to give you that information. You can also call 1800-APL-CARE (275-2273).

Yup, Mr. Burns is right. Just call 1-800-APL-CARE and tell them you'd like to find out the warranty anniversary date on your item. They'll look it up for you. They may also ask you if you'd like to purchase Apple Care, but that's their job.
