I like carplay in my GM but still I get very upset about the audio system because if the phone makes any sound it will send it through bluetooth which causes the radio to pause and play the sound and then the radio never comes back on unless I turn it on again. So if I am using navigation every time the direction comes on the radio cuts off but unlike a normal car where the radio comes back again the radio just stays off and I have to press back onto the channel to get it to play again until the next direction is played by the phone and it happens all over again

Wait. It doesn't work with Bluetooth? In 2016?

No because its basically screen mirroring so the phone can't go to sleep during carplay and likely the battery would run out pretty quick that way

Interesting. See, I thought it was like an iOS API of sorts that is part of the car firmware, and the iPhone connects to that. In my opinion that would be a superior approach. I use Bluetooth audio every day in my car (not CarPlay enabled). I couldn't imaging having to plug in my phone.

Chevrolet, Kia, Hyundai, I'm surprised Apple would want to be associated with such low end cars, especially for rolling out the feature. That Honda looks terrible.

Only problem I have found with Car Play, they all use resistive touch screens. Apple really should set a standard and say capacitive only for Car Play.

I have a 2016 VW GLI (Jetta) with CarPlay. I have no issue with Apple's map software - it works well for all of my needs, however, there are a couple of annoying CarPlay issues:
1) I have to re-boot the radio after a few trips with CarPlay. It will connect to the iPhone several times (maybe 7 or 8 times), but then not recognize it without a reboot. Then the process begins all over again.
2) Obviously, it is still a wired solution which is really annoying as I don't have a decent place the stash the phone and cable without the cable getting wrapped around the shifter or the phone being inconveniently accessible.

I'm hoping the VW has an update soon that will fix the constant reboot requirement. I know that they have also worked on a version of wireless CarPlay.

Also conspicuously missing from this list (for people who follow such things) is the Chevy Bolt, entering production at the end of the year. This new EV first shown at the Detroit auto show in January will also support CarPlay.

You'd be surprised how many people thought the exact same thing you did. Trust me, Apple and Google implemented their systems in the most appropriate way possible. The liability is too great for either company. If an OS update makes the CP/AA overlay wonky that's annoying. If an OS update upsets the car's firmware...

Hummmm... sounds like a bug to me. No issues here in a GM car with the voice pausing the radio or the music play.

I looked into that Honda Hydrogen Fuel Cell car... are they serious about trying to sell it?

It can't be charged with a normal wall outlet. It can't run on gasoline. Instead you need to go to a hydrogen fuel station - it appears that 5 were built in the past 15 years in the US.

They have a home fueling station that they were developing... they still mention it in the current press release, but the last time they made any announcement regarding progress on it was in 2007.

So the car is all but completely useless in the US (and indeed, in most of the world).

7 days, 19 hours until I put my deposit down on my Tesla Model 3.

Holy moly. You must really want a Model 3 if you're willing to wait 2+ years to get it. That is the definition of patience.

BMW Group, where for art thou?

Good luck waiting. Despite BMW AG announcing they would (eventually) support CarPlay, there's no rush to do so. BMW would rather focus on iDrive before supporting third party systems which I agree with. If BMW can make iDrive do 90% (if not 100%) of what CarPlay provides, why bother going third party? It's not like iDrive didn't already support smartphones (although in a limited capacity). I'm all for options if the OEM is not going to bother to give customers what they want but BMW, more than any other OEM infotainment system, seems to be heavily invested in their infotainment system in making it as complete as possible and I commend them for that.

Never. Try streaming turn-by-turn directions, both audio and viewable maps, over low bandwidth BT. Like trying to download a BluRay movie over dial up.

Connections over wifi will come, but I'm sure that will require an updated car system.
Interesting. I have a 6+ (1gb ram), so Carplay puts a toll on it if I have all Apple Maps, Google Maps, Spotify, and FaceTime audio running simultaneously. Kind of amusing (and annoying) to watch it freeze and eventually crash. :(

Even when the phone is plugged in, there's a 1s delay for each tap on the Carplay screen. So I can see how terrible it would be if allowed to connect via bluetooth.

I just don't understand why Honda offers CarPlay in the Ridgeline, but not the Pilot.

Me either! Your name rings a bell... I think we shared the same sentiment on the last carplay and honda thread on here. Honda has a ways to go with the Pilot. My 2nd was just born friday and I'm already feeling the need for a 3rd row. Hoping they get their act together soon cause the Pilot is really the only crossover I want...

I want it as soon as I can. The priorities are:
1 - Tesla employees get it first. I applied three years ago; they weren't interested. (This is just a widely reported rumor - I asked an employee whether it was true, they told me they're not allowed to comment. I assume that means it's true - why make rules to not comment on things which don't exist?)
2 - Existing customers get it next. Although my bank would loan me the money for a Model S, it would be a poor fiscal decision for me. So pass.
3 - The sooner you get in line, the earlier you get it. I plan on showing up 3 hours before they start taking deposits. I may not be first in line, but I should at least be near the front.

Also, it's kind of in stealth mode right now. Nobody has seen the car yet - it'll be revealed 10 hours after the company starts taking deposits. So I expect they may have even more people placing deposits on Friday than place it on Thursday.

The line will get much longer than 2 years before it gets shorter, I think. Plus the company says the car will ship in mid-late 2017, which makes me think the initial wait will be no more than 21 months. If it's 2+ years, so be it.

On 1, I agree. If it wasn't likely he/she would have just said no. Not sure if you've seen this, but they go into more detail on pre-orders. There are some nuances to the pecking order. Also they've updated to say they are scheduled to go into production late 2017. Interesting read. https://www.teslamotors.com/blog/reserving-model-3 .

I asked Mini about their support of CarPlay and they gave me an opaque answer to both the question of when they will include it in their cars, and whether the existing head units will be software upgradable at such time. This, even though they are announced supporters of CarPlay. I told them I am ready to buy a new car now and I am not going to spend $30k for a one of theirs when they can't even tell me if the heads will be software upgradable. So they lose a sale.

As for iDrive, we own a BMW with it (granted not the most recent version), and frankly, it stinks. So I cannot commend BMW for iDrive.

Most car manufacturers refresh different models at different times. You'll likely see CarPlay as an option on the Pilot once it gets its next refresh. (When they next do an 'all new', not just the next 'model year'.)
