Chimei 22" LCD?

Has anyone used it before?

Apparently these guys are super cheap, only $379 on Newegg for a 22" LCD display!

The resolution is 1680 x 1050--the same as a MacBook Pro 17. A 23- or 24-inch LCD (1920 x 1200) will give you 30 percent more resolution.

But will resolution matter is you are using it as say... a EyeTV monitor?

Chimei is a LCD panel manufacturer...so it looks as though they are also getting into selling the whole kit as well. They aren't really a well known name to consumers, so there is no price premium for the name. The MBP15 uses a Chimei panel, so do many other notebooks.

There are only a few manufacturers of LCD panels in the world, and Chimei is one of them....everyone else repackages panel made by someone else.

Sounds like a good deal, assuming that the rest of the components are decent.

EDIT: Do note that the specs indicate that the panel is not full 8-bits per channel colour, but this isn't a huge deal for many people. Most notebooks (including Apple's lines) are not. Also, most low and medium end desktop panels are not as well (I suspect the iMac, although it looks good, is not full colour depth as well). Low ms, high colour depth panels are expensive...so one of those is usually sacrificed for cheaper panels.

How do you know that Chimei makes the MBP 15" panels? I thought all apples used was LG and Samsung panels.

There was a disassembly picture when the machines first came out, and the label said CHI MEI CORP. with a model number.


EDIT: I know neither of these are definitive proof, but so far this morning, this is all I can find.
