no whinning from me...i dont give a crap if apple introduces a PDA or whatever they want to call it...i could care less.

I just think that the trend in these toys is heading more and more to be like a laptop...which is a "gay as hell" trend. Screw these damn pdas ...i dont give a flying flip what they do.

eyelikeart,
Here is a question for you:

Do you know why there are so many different threads on Mac rumors?

Answer: so people like you can find a thread they are interested in. If you don't like this thread, have the decency to refrain from posting.

Thanks.

If I had a web cam right now you'd see me mooning you. Take a prozac and get lost.

here's my idea:
a pda with a cool, very simple osx operating system. offered in 5, 10, and 20 GB. who really cares about it being too small when you can have all that storage? (at least until a fast, large capacity, non-mechanical means of storage can come to realizability on the market) a full color lcd covers the entire front and uses a pen with newton writing technology. four ports: firewire, audio output, audio input, and expansion. mp3 should easily be built in as should quicktime. camera, wireless internet, video input from dvd or tv, and other things can all be bought as separate hardware add ons that plug into the expansion port. OS/software/hardware can record straight from a dv camera, live-encode to mp3 from input, convert streamed video to quicktime, and play it.
'twould be nice.

sounds like a laptop, dude! they are out now.

;)

Laptop doesn't fit in any pocket I have.

Also, everyone already makes laptops.

When Apple comes out with Macfreek's device it will be a smash hit, just like iPod1 has been.

Remember, Apple has to find ways to sell itself to regular consumers. The pros already know that Apple's stuff is very useful to them. Consumers still think their PCs do what our Macs do. They don't understand the difference in the quality of the experience. iPod 2 is just one more reason for them to give Apple a try.

I think it may be a key part of Apple's plans for growth on the consumer side.

just a thought...

One thing that hasn't been mentioned that seperates PDA's from notebooks is cost. granted a notebook can do a lot more, if apple were to update the iPod it would be more economical for users, costing maybe up to $1000 less than an ibook, which to teen users is a heck of a lot more probable. yes, ipod is an excuse for a laptop, but you have to remember cost is a big issue! that all i got...

Does anyone here use a Wacom tablet for drawing? How difficult is it to follow when you scribble on a surface but the output is on a seperate screen?

Just curious because if Apple were to release a Newton 2 it would be a nice touch to have the back of the cover be an input tablet to write on. That would give better balance to screen space vs. writing space.

Is it going to happen? Hah! Just an interesting thought though.

Wacom is the best input device I've ever used.

For CAD, Finder navigation, Photoshop, Gaming....

Try the combo of an Intuos and an Airstick for Quake III .......you can't miss! Utterly sick, I used to do this with Mechwarrior2 on an 8500. Can you say "Cockpit sniping at Extreme range?"

Having the cover right next to the screen would be too distracting though, the advantage to intuos is having the pad in your lap and the screen in front of you (other than precision of course). Plus the cover would be a liability in terms of breakage. If it's just a flip cover it'd be cheap to replace.

I'll reiterrate: A device as cool as is being described will have a new term coined for it. It won't be a PDA. I think it's inevitable that Apple make such a device but I don't think it'll sell into that market. I think it'll sell into a new market in-between laptop and PDA.

this is true. but why make a laptop fit in your pocket? why make anything that has what a laptop has fit in your pocket?

i agree. but the way these people are talking on here about the future pda will make them cost just as much as laptops now a days. ya dig? cool! small screens suck arse.

I think everyone who has posted agrees it won't be called a PDA.
Further, the PDA-type functions, while present, would be just a small part of the whole capability. I don't even think most of the Wintel crowd would call it a PDA.

By the way, would it be possible to build in all the functionality we have described PLUS cell phone and keep it anywhere near iPod size?
Or is that impossible?

It reminds ME of my PC-Geek friends in HS that had those little data-watches. The ones you had to use a pen to press the buttons on and had type about 3mm high.

I was just thinking for handwriting recognition it could be done. The screen itself would still be input ready as well. Just a thought and a way to differentiate the product from others already on the market. There would definitely be cost disadvantages, but that's true of the iPod as well. Apple doesn't seem to mind!
