BOE is famous for making most of the FlexView IPS panels in old ThinkPads, where they were putting out high-res 1400x1050 12” and 1600x1200 15” panels way back in the early 2000’s, long before Apple got their act together with laptop screen quality. They’re still highly sought after by enthusiasts to this day!

Assuming they haven’t lost their mojo, BOE has a long history of hanging with the best in their industry in terms of quality and cutting-edge tech. I don’t think you need to worry about Apple cutting corners here.
While I like your post, I don’t agree with the last part that Apple doesn’t cut corners. Their iPhone screen lottery is a very real and depressing thing.

As if Apple’s OLED panel quality isn’t bad enough. I’ve returned three iPhone 13 Pro Max models because they all had varying degrees of screen uniformity problems where one part is a different tint than the rest. The 4th one still has the same problem but a lot less noticeable now so I guess I’ll just live with it. Too frustrating to keep going back and fourth playing the endless quality control lottery.

It’s ridiculous that for the same price you’re getting vastly different OLED display panels. Can’t wait to see how much worse it will get as Apple further reduces quality standards for the sake of profit by using cheaper suppliers.

Made in China doesn't mean bad quality, you get what you paid for, virtually everything is made in China, including your iPhones, MacBooks, iPad Pros, Apple Watches and etc....

If you are willing to pay more, you get good quality product, but if you buy some cheap Amazon no name brand stuff for fraction of the cost of a named brand, you'd wonder why it's so cheap, and where do they cut cost...

In short, the problem is not made in China, the problem is how much one is willing to pay.

China-based display maker BOE will supply Apple with OLED LTPO displays for the higher-end models of the iPhone 15 lineup in 2023, according to a new report from The Elec.

Following unsuccessful attempts by the Chinese maker in 2020 to supply displays for the iPhone 12 series, BOE joined Apple's list of display makers to produce panels for the baseline 6.1-inch iPhone 13 earlier this year. Apple's higher-end iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max displays, which require more advanced technology, are made by Samsung.

According to today's report, BOE is looking to expand its ability to manufacture OLED LTPO displays, which enable a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz, in time for the iPhone 15 Pro, expected in 2023. For the iPhone 14 series expected this fall, BOE will continue to supply displays for only the lower-tier handsets while Pro series displays will continue to rely on Samsung and LG.

For the first time since the iPhone X, Apple is rumored to be planning a major redesign of the display on the higher-end iPhone 14 models, including removing the notch. Apple is rumored to be replacing the notch with a hole punch and a pill-shaped cutout at the top of the display for the TrueDepth system and front-facing camera.

I certainly hope they don’t go with the “hole punch and pill” design. It is hideously ugly

Talking from the technological perspective, this is great news. BOE has superior display technology, and its display is amazing. If you check the spec of their displays in production, you will be surprised at how advanced they are.
If you don't want a China-backed BOE screen in your iPhone, then you can choose the non-pro version. Apple will continue to have you as a customer. If you don't want to have any China-made parts in your cellphone, then you need to spend a tremendous amount of time to find a new cellphone; it is quite difficult. ;)

I'm getting an iPhone 14. I dont want a Chinese made Screen. I trust Samsung and LG for screens.

Yet another way APPLE is cheapening their product and still demanding premium prices.

If I wanted a cheap Chinese screen I would buy a non Samsung CHEAP Android phone.

In due time, it will be an expensive Chinese screen.

It‘s not about being made in China, it‘s related to BOE‘s poor track record of maintaining quality. It failed repeatedly, that‘s why people react, and they react to the combination of BOE, display and Apple.

Most PC panels are made by BOE from dirt cheap ones to premium 4K OLED ones.

The quality only depends on how much you are willing to pay subtracting middle man cost like Walmart. This is true for everything Made in China.

P.S. for a $30 shirt at Walmart, Chinese factories only get around $2. The rest is shipping and Walmart retail profit. Why would you expect a $2 shirt to be of any quality? If you pay $250 on a Made in China shirt, however, you get unrivalled quality.

Pardon the ignorance, but is Samsung’s manufacturing in S. Korea or China? I assume S. Korea but don’t know. Whatever standard Apple gives Samsung, in my opinion, Samsung is nailing it. The 13 Pro display is the best electronics display I’ve ever used. Between the brightness, color accuracy, ProMOTION, it’s a terrific panel. Hopefully Apple become increasingly less reliant on China for all of their products.

Fair point, I’m still using an original SE so I’m a bit out of the loop on newer iPhone quality. All I meant was that that BOE being a Chinese manufacturer didn’t automatically mean they were cheap or poor quality, when they’ve been a name in the high-DPI high-end panel game for almost 20 years.
