Apple’s trade in program in China has some different clause than North American or any where around the world.

Usually, when trade in with Apple, you no longer has ownership of the device. You can no longer get the devices back. When you decided to return the newly purchased devices, Apple will refund you the difference and a gift card contains value of your trade in.

However, things are different in China for whatever the reason and it makes no sense at all.

Here are the clause from Apple China website directly:

7退货与退款

自购买之日起14天内,客户可将新产品以原样并无损坏之状态, 连同原始购货凭证、发票及原始产品包装一并退回。如在购买之日起8天内退回,苹果公司将返还客户的原机并将客户用以购买新产品而实际支付的差额予以退款。如超过购买日起8天退回,客户可选择获得用以购买新产品而实际支付的差额退款、或更换等值或更高价值的其他产品。

Translation:

Customer has 14 days since the purchase day for return or exchange, when the devices is in new condition, along with original purchase receipts and original packaging. If return happens within 8 days since the purchase date, Apple will return the traded in devices and refund the difference. If return happens outside of 8 days since purchase date, Apple will refund the difference for purchasing new equal or higher priced item.

In other words, if the return is happened after 8 days, customer will only get refund for the difference paid. The traded in value will not be refund.

If Apple is serious about Chinese market, how can it treading Chinese consumer differently from other market? Why is Apple only refund price difference when past 8 days?

First they return the actual device within the 8 days period not the cost. Second that’s probably the minimum they have to according to Chinese regulations.

A bit unrelated, but fun fact nonetheless:
AppleCare plan works the same across all available countries but China, meaning a device with unused AppleCare bought outside China will not be able to enjoy its benefits when using that device in China.

Devices brought outside of China are not able to be serviced under Chinese Apple Store, unless you brought your original receipt.

I don’t even need receipt for my iPhone services in Canada. Obviously, if my Canadian Apple Store purchased iPhone broke when I visit China, I can’t get it services, because I don’t have receipt with me (I cannot access my gmail, unless I turn on roaming with my Canadian carrier, 15 dollars a day.)

Even if you bring original receipt, they would not be able to provide service, according to Apple Store staff. AFAIK, the device has to be bought from China and with receipt to receive service. I could be wrong though.

Apple has changed its warranty since last year. Before 2018, Apple Stores in China do not offer services for device sold outside China (including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan). Since 2018, original receipt is needed to obtain service.

Well, ok. This is interesting to know.
