Copying ideas is one thing. Japan copied a lot of western ideas. Japan even improved on those ideas, or manufactured them to a higher standard.

But blatant copying of a company's name and logo trademarks (as has happened to Tesla in China) is something else entirely. I don't see how China is improving on these.

I'm sure the similarity is purely coincidental. ;)

I dont think a country like China could become a first world country and still do things like this. You cant become first world simply from imitation. Imitation only gets you so far in life. In order for China to truly become a great country, they will have to forgo these practices. so, as I stated, this is just a phase china is going through.

I dont knoe if a japanese company ever blatantly copied a western company like that before, but I wouldnt be surprised if it had happened.

Absolutely.

As those of us who remember the 1950s know, "Made in Japan" back then was an indicator of a cheap knock-off copy of an American item.

A Japanese girl recently uploaded several YouTube videos showing that it even continued long after that:

As you said, it's a phase that many countries have gone through.

For example, most people can think of quite a few cars and airplanes (and even the Space Shuttle) whose design the USSR ripped off.
