Before I sell off my otherwise well functioning iPhone 5 in favour of something shinier and pinker, I'd like to replace the rear camera which has a large amount of dust accumulated, making photos unusable.

Replacement cameras range in price from $10-$40. Reviews are all over the board. The repair itself is straightforward so I'd just like to hear from people who have done this repair themselves, have a discerning eye and are happy with the quality of the photos taken.

Which camera did you buy? Are they all from the same manufacturer and simply marked up to different amounts?

Good find; that part seems to have good reviews. Before I saw your reply I bought one from iphone-parts.net because it was local. It shipped quickly and seems to be an original part. The repair was *MUCH* more difficult than I expected. I followed the instructions at ifixit.com – 34 steps – and only lost one screw and broke one very small internal tab in the process lol. But it worked perfectly!

The first time I fired the camera up, the screen was black for about 5 seconds, which was unnerving. It seems like the phone recognized the camera was being used for the first time and put it through some diagnostics or reboot before firing it up. Makes you appreciate a bit how much is going on behind the scenes...

Anyway, the camera would appear, after basic testing, to perform exactly like the original. Even colours, same low-light performance, etc.

I just wanted to see what the shipping charges from etrade-supply to Canada would be – C$43!!! I bought the part from iphone-parts.net for C$25.50, shipping included.
