Choppy playback on iTunes movies

13 " Mid 2009 MBP, 2.26 GHz

Movies that are HD and not downloaded to my computer are stalling really badly. Tried setting preference for a lower resolution, but that didn't work. Internet connectivity is good, and playback on my iMac is fine, so I don't think this is an internet issue. Any hints on what I can do to fix this?
