A question many parents ask. Best answer: only you know if he's old enough.
If you get him an iPad get him a mini not a full size. And make sure you have all the restrictions etc turned on before you give it to him. Set up his own account (after iOS 8 comes out it will be possible). And set up rules with appropriate measures. Like if you tell him he can't get a Facebook account and he does then you will take the iPad away. No taking it to school etc or you will take it away. and so on. Get Apple Care plus on it but tell him that he pays the fee if it gets damaged. same if it gets lost. and so on
Since this thread originated, we have purchased him an iPad 3 (32GB). His school has had a BYOD the last two years so it was useful for school and homework.
Now he is in Middle School and he uses it more then ever for school work.
Yes, there are games on it, but he seems to know when its time for school work and when it isn't.
