Is there a setting to remove the 8 boxes under the search bar.

You can use the New tab redirect extension to redirect you to google or any website you want instead of showing that page.

I agree. You can also change the home page to the Google Search page. Shows your search bar in the middle, as you prefer, and no recent search boxes (I don't know what those boxes are actually called - Tab boxes/something?)
