So having got thoroughly bored of waiting for cinema display bumps (I've been stalling for more than a year now) I figured that as tomorrow represents an entire year since apple even last price dropped the monitor range; that maybe now might be the time to give up on them and go 3rd party.

I'm mostly tempted by the 27inch dell monitor (currently 30% off at the dell website) that is essentially a 23inch display with greater pixel pitch so that I could run it off of the single DVI connection on my macbook (rather than being limited to my ageing G5 with the 30inch model).

What do you all think? Am I being rash and should be holding out for a long-long-overdue :apple: update or is there no reason to suspect that anything new is coming and in the interests of future compliance (HDCP anyone?) should buy from someone who's updated their product line in the last year.

    Best,
    Possession

I would personally go with the 24'' screen by dell...

The 27'' pixel density isnt that high, running the same resolution as the 24'' screens. The Apple screen although look aesthetically pleasing, you are paying a lot for just a nice aluminum case. With the Dell 24'' screen, you can get 3x more the inputs functionality. It is also a lot more future proof since the new screens have the new DisplayPort, that are suppose to be replacing HDMI for computers.

I like Dell 2707.. it is a nice compromise between the 24, 27, and 30 inch size, all of which i've had.

Don't have to squint for the small text like the 30..

I'm pretty sure that the DisplayPort is only on the 30" 3008WFP model. As for getting the 27" Dell, it really depends on the OP's uses. The 2707WFP's pixel-pitch is not "greater," but rather larger, meaning less sharp. If you do graphic design or anything like that, you would be better off with a sharper display, like the 2408WFP or the 3007WFP... or the ACD of course. There are other 30" displays around at the $1000 price as well, but yeah, they don't have all the ports. Some do have HDMI though. If your needs are entertainment/media viewing, MS Office, and websurfing, then I would go with the 2707WFP. You will have a larger screen, nicely sized text, natively full 1080P, and a nice array of ports.

The 2408WFP does have a DisplayPort, HDMI, and almost every other port imaginable haha. Actually, as of now it seems to have more on it than the 27" model!

I am not sure how you derived Dell 2707WFP having greater pixel pitch than 23" ACD, as they both have 1920x1200 resolution. Specifically, Dell 2707WFP has 84 pixels per inch, whereas 23" ACD has 98. I would go with Dell's 2408WFP.

His terminology was just confusing by saying "greater" instead of "bigger." In terms of pixel pitch, larger is less sharp. The 2707WFP has a 0.303 mm pixel pitch, the 23" ACD has a 0.258 mm pixel pitch. Greater = bigger = less sharp.
